How much to pay for amiga 4000 ?
« on: February 03, 2017, 02:14:11 AM »
Hi all :

I am very happy with my unaccelerated amiga 2000, is perfect for 2d graphics
and animations.
But i really would love to buy an amiga 4000 with a 040 accelerator later.
How much is a fair price to acquire one ?
Thank you very much !!!

If you only want a little more speed, you're better off getting an accelerator for your 2000. A 4000 is a good choice if you need *both* AGA and Zorro III slots for further expansion. I think a stock 4000 is going to be $600 these days, minimum. Probably more.

Depends what else is in there and if that too is something you're looking to acquire.
I shopped around for a long time until I could find the near-vanilla A4000 as I was going to put a Mediator card into it. I finally found one with an 040/40 and not much else. It was around A$500 and I felt that was a fair price.
---------------AGA Collection---------------
1) Amiga A4000 040 40MHz, Mediator PCI, Voodoo 3 3000, Creative PCI128, Fast Ethernet, Indivision AGA Mk2 CR, DVD/CD-RW, OS 3.9 BB2
2) Amiga A1200 040 25MHz, Indivision AGA Mk2 CR, IDEfix, PCMCIA WiFi, slim slot load DVD/CD-RW, OS 3.9 BB2
3) Amiga CD32 + SX1, OS 3.1

And a faster Workbench/OS. There's a fair usability and experience difference between my A2000 040 and my A4000D 040 in 3.9.

I think $990 is a fair price. Do you wanna buy one? :)

My advice - don't go chasing rainbows. Use and learn and enjoy what you have. However, a bit of extra CPU grunt over a 68000 would be nice for you. If you're serious about upgrading then you'd be better off waiting for the Vampire for your A2000 as it will be cheaper than going the A4000/68040 route.

An A2000 with a Vampire accelerator would outperform most A4000s anyway.
So its really down to AGA graphics, which the Vampire is supposed to eventually implement.
And A2000's have reliable capacitors that don't kamikaze your system.

At AmiWest 2016, I sold a 4000 in good shape, no battery issues for $100.

so, come to AmiWest 2017!

I agree that getting a Vampire board is the best option.  Both cheaper and faster than an A4000/040 and you get some extra features like RTG, which alone would cost hundreds more to add to any Amiga via Zorro or PCI.

If you can wait for the standalone Vampire board then you'll have a nice small, quiet and that can sit alongside the A2000 and use far less power than the A4000/040.

C'mon Gertsy, you know Americans can't afford $A990 with their economy trumpily about to crash ;)

Your first born should be enough payment.

OP is in USA, so I'm wondering if it has anything to do with the 2x 4000's up for sale on Amibay at the moment with preferred buying in USA.

I need to go to Amiwest to pick up SACC-guy specials.   if you got any more let me know, I don't mind the expensive shipping.. :P

Edit - a towered a1200 be a little bit cheaper and give you AGA.   hey even a traditional a1200 case is nice and compact compared to a big boxed amiga..  I think the main attraction for a 4000 is just to have the last top end Amiga :P

I disagree with your prediction. Take a good long look after 1 year.

$100! That was a deal for whoever bought it. If you look at eBay sales most basic A4000s sell for around $700 (I sold one just last year and it sold for $760USD)
Amiga 2000HD Indivision ECS
Amiga 4000D towerised OS 3.1 and 3.9 on CF cards
Indivision AGA, Mediator 4000
Video Toaster 4000 Flyer v4.3 Millenium.
202gig of video drive space & 5gig audio.

Thank you all for the replies.
I have a great pentium system with original lightwave 3d.
Is super fast and powerful, and don't need amiga for 3d/cgi.
I can even run aladdin 4d in emulation and is 20 times faster than a 040.
My amiga is excelent for what I use, brilliance, deluxe paint 4, and
moviesetter and disney animation studio for 2d cartoons.
My amiga 2000 is 68000, but is perfect for my artistic needs.
I just wanted to get an 040 to render aladdin 4d in amiga native mode,
but is not needed. I look forward to get a vampire board.
Thank you all for replying.
