FlashCard Boot
« on: March 02, 2004, 10:52:18 AM »
Is it possible to boot from a FlashCard connected to a USB card reader?

I have an Algor USB card, and I'm thinking seriously to copy the whole OS to a FC (not just the patches to the flashrom). Has any one tried this before? I've already read for the IDE2FC thingie, but this one does it work?

Why, just format the drive using HDToolBox with a nice partitioning (don't forget to make it bootable and set the bootpri higher than the harddisk) and FFS or SFS, install the filesystem into the RDB, install Poseidon in the Algor FlashRom using the fine graphical drag&drop Luciferin software and here you go... Theoretically.

If it does not boot from the USB card reader (because the drive is not mounted early enough), but it does appear on the workbench, try increasing the startup delay in the Trident prefs.

If you get some DOS requester while booting, remove PsdRestart from the FlashRom. Should help.

Enjoy!

It is not possible to boot from a USB device, at least not without first accessing the OS from a boot drive... USB cards have to be loaded with a device driver.

If you want to boot with a CF card, use an IDE2CF adapter. I use one in my A4000, and it works like a charm... FAAAAST too.

Mac Mini 1.5GHz, that might run MorphOS someday, when the fools who own it come to the realization that 30 minutes just isn\'t enough time to play with it enough to decide whether or not you like it enough to cough up $200.

As Chris said in his post, you can if you have an Algor or Highway with Romulus addon, as they can store the USB drivers in their flashrom, and add them to the OS in the boot stage,(just like SCSI interfaces add their drivers from ROMs)
