ASIMCDFS FLOPPY Problems - newbie question

My old commercial AsimCDFS version had a bad block on the floppy. I managed to download a version - ADK format - to my DF0: Gotex Floppy Emulator.However, every-time I run the installer from DF0:, the installer looks to the SYS: dir on floppy and tells me that I don't have enough space. I assume its trying to install on my DFO? I have tried Expert Mode install but can't get it to redirect to my HD for a new install.

3.1 and 3.9 both can read CD's directly. Any particular reason you need AsimCDFS?

SYS: should always be a logical assign pointing to the boot partition. Do not name a volume like this.

If SYS: points to your boot partition and it still complains about lack of space, make sure that there is less than 2 GB free on the partition.

OK, during my old Amiga DAW days, I use to use this software to read/burn CD/DVDs. I have one internal drive and one external. Are you saying I no longer need to worry about this with 3.9?

My SYS: drive is also big so space is not an issue

Ah, okay, yes, if you're trying to burn discs, that's another story. Only software I ever used to successfully burn discs on an Amiga was MakeCD. It worked, but had a painful learning curve, as I recall.

To be clear, I just finished installing 3.9 into a new partition. Do I need to assign SYS: to this drive? I would of thought that was automatic from the install.

Are you trying to do some kind of multi-boot setup? If not, SYS: should always be your boot partition. That partition can be named whatever you want, i.e., "Workbench3.9", but with SYS: logical assign pointed to it, as Thomas said above.

SYS: is automatically assigned to the device you booted from. So make sure you didn't boot from the Asim floppy.

The other issue that Thomas alluded to is *too much* space on a partition. Older versions of Installer, which I suspect Asim is using, get confused if more than 2GB of space is available. Simply change the default tool of the install icon on the Asim disk to point to the version of Installer on your hard drive (either in C: or SYS:Utilities). The 3.9 install should have put it there for you.

Finally, make sure you're using Asim 3.10 and not an older version.

SYS is always the boot drive by default, so the only reason your Amiga thinks that SYS is the floppy is because you booted from the floppy instead of your OS3.9 boot drive. I'm not sure whether that's what you're supposed to do with that installation disk or not though.

That did the trick Matt...you were right, my Boot partition is 3.8Gigs which I am sure caused some problems, that issue, along with redirecting the installer icon to SYS:Utilities worked....so thank you

BTW: I am ~ 30min west of Boston....we should connect some day to chat more. I am in process of reviving my old A2000 !

FYI, having a boot partition that large will potentially cause problems with older software, somewhere down the line.

Imho I make my Workbench3.9 partition around 400-500MB. Don't really need it much larger than that and since a lot of programs write to it, I'd rather not risk some old software flaking out because of the size.

One of my favorite directory utilities, DirWork, is one that crashes if you try to write to drives or partitions above the 4GB mark, so in this instance I only use it to move files into my main partitions (within the first 4GB of space).

Yup, 500MB is all you can possibly use. Will hold every hack, utility, or dongle you'll ever need.

Work is where all the other crap goes. The Save Your Boot Partition crusade rolls on.
