Flickery Picasso96 modes about 800x600
« on: March 01, 2004, 10:10:47 PM »
Hi all..

Have just installed a Cybervision 64/3D in my Amiga 4000/060 and need a bit of help. I'm using Picasso96 which seems to be working well - the only thing is all modes about 800x600 are flickery and really very hard on the eye. Many of them are also "squashed in" at the edges ... i.e. the workbench screen is dimpled with these modes.

I know the monitor can display modes about 800x600 as it's quite recent and certainly can on the PC. 800x600 is however rock solid. This flickering is just as bad as an interlaced mode on non-flicker fixed systems!

Where am I going wrong?

How many Hz is your screenmode? Not KHz, standard Hz. The lower the number, the more flicker. For comparison, NTSC is 60Hz and PAL is 50Hz, slightly more flickery. It's possible your graphics card doesn't have enough RAM to generate a high-res display with a high vertical hold. Try dropping the depth to 8bit. Playing with the screenmode properties in P96Mode may also help.

I'm having similar problems with the 1024x768 24bit or higher. Happens also when I'm using PIP video, with a high-res WB.

I think it has to do with the specific card settings (Picasso96Mode).

Your config is way off - monitor permitting you should get about max 120 Hz on 800x600@24bit (85 MHz pixelclock; 10 MHz more available with overclocking). I'm happy with my 100 Hz at about 63 MHz clock, and the monitor runs about 63 kHz, easy for a modern one.
