Blizzard PPC 603e/240, 060/50
« on: March 01, 2004, 01:55:51 PM »
I have just ordered this item from www.vesalia.com. I have heard that you must have a fan to this board.

1. What type of fan should I go for?

2. Where can I buy one?

3. How do I connect the fan?

4. Is there something else I should think about when I connect this board to my A1200?

5. What memory type is working on this board?

Thanks in advance!
Greetings from Jörgen!

The board has a little fan on it, wich for the most part will be fine. I found that an old 486 Heat sink and fan fits the 68k quite well.

You can use any 72pin simms if you can still find them :-/

I would not recomend that you run this in a dektop A1200, I did, and mine melted (though I have an 040 which is much hotter than the 060). Try to tower your A1200 system.

Hello and thanks for your reply!

My A1200 is towered and I have added a lot of hardware to it. My spec are as follows:

A1200 in a tower
Blizzard 1230 wo FPU will be replace with the BPPC card.
Fast ATA controller from Elbox.
PC keyboard converter.
Samsung CD-RW
HD Floppy drive
Pcmcia ethernet, will be replaced by a pci network card
10 GB Harddrive
Mediator SX
Voodoo 4 4500 graphics card
Terratec Sound card TT 512i

Softwares that I recently have bought is
Storm C 3.0
Ibrowse 2.3
Samba
Final Writer
Quake 2

I started with my A1200 and a Blizzard 1230/50MHz for several years ago. Now when i can afford it, I want all the new cool hardware for my A1200. I love Amiga and will always support Amiga and third part manufactories.

So you say I can use a 486 fan for the 060 CPU? Where can I find such a fan nowadays?

There is some items still on my buy list. I want to have USB on my Amiga. Can someone recommend me what USB controller I should go for?

Best Regards from Jörgen Jönsson

I found my 486 fan in a bin... it even had a Whole working PC attached to it!

To be perfectly honest the 060 doesn't need a Fan. It just doesn't get as hot as the 040.

I think you should go for a cheap standard PCI USB card, or maybe one of those Clockport USB cards (subway) if you want something that is non standard.

Regarding the fan, just go to your local computer store and buy a 40x40 mm fan. I think it will have 2 wires, which can be attached to a normal hdd and cd power cord.

As for the USB ports, go for the Spider USB from Elbox. You have the slot for it anyway.

Btw. cool setup :-)

But for a while ago there was some problems with drivers. I can't really remember the details, but it was some sort of argue between Elbox and the one that did the drivers for the usb card. Is this solved? or was it maybe a another card?

Problem was that you couldn't register the USB stack program for usage with Spider, but that is solved now. Keep in mind that you will need to purchase this too if you want to use your USB for more than 1-5 minutes at a time :) It's only 15-20 euros if i remember correctly.

They were talking about the 68k fan. The PPC fan is already included, although I agree that you should think ahead and buy a few spares, just to make sure.

On AmiBench right now, there's a guy selling Cyberstorm and Blizzard PPC boards (for A1200/A3000/A4000) at 'half price'. Wish I could afford one!

Cheers,

Finally I have been contacted by Vesalia. They did not have the 240MHz version but they did have the Blizzard PPC 603e/210MHz with 060/50MHz and a 64MB memory module that I already have paid for. They said they will ship it on monday 8:th of March 2004. I was ruined on this card. I payed 523.85 Euro including shipping cost and the paypal fee.

But I have some more questions about this card.

Can I mix one 64MB module with a 32MB module? If I can mix, is it possible to mix different memory speeds?

Is there a significant difference in speed, between the 240MHz version and the 210MHz version PPC 603e processor?

Best regards to you all
