OS4.1 download?
« on: November 30, 2016, 11:07:34 AM »
I want to buy OS4.1 for emulation, but the only link I can find on the Hyperion site is for OS4.1 Classic: http://www.hyperion-entertainment.com/index.php/where-to-buy/direct-downloads/174-amigaos-41-final-edition-for-classic

Is the only way to get the other/standard version to buy a physical copy from a dealer? http://www.amigaos.net/content/4/where-buy

Only the Classic version is available as a download and it's the only version that runs on UAE.

AFAIR, you can't emulate with anything but the Classic version.

I know it seems odd, but in terms of manpower AmigaKit is really a small company. They have LOADS of ongoing projects, some of which take priority meaning other things get delayed.

The CDs are professionally mastered and Acube organise the production and handle distribution.  Dealers can't just burn off some CDR version and sell it.  pre-order is just there so customers know they have their copy reserved.

Look like they've got some more copies of Gorky 17 on the way so I might pre-order since I missed it last time and I might forget and miss it again.

Unless you do what Bigfoot did and emulate a Pegasos 2 with Qemu.

Ah, it's only Classic - thanks for clearing that up Rob. I've looked at a few YT videos and don't see much I can't achieve with the older 3.1/3.9 versions. Unless the videos are just very bad at demonstrating the system.

I thought from what I heard about the Alice project that 4.1 'standard' works under emulation but it's obviously the classic version. Slight gutted :/

Thought the only difference between "standard" and "classic" was what processor they run on. I.e., Classic/68K/PowerUp hardware, or newer (Sam, X1000, X5000, etc.). Isn't there actually like six different versions?

Eh, still think it's silly to run out of something that they should really be trying as hard as possible to get into as many hands as possible. Heck, give me a couple cups of coffee and I'll stay up all night mastering them, and done.

The Classic version has all the same features as the other versions.  UAE just doesn't present it with all the hardware required for all those features.  The next update of the Classic version is supposed to lift the memory limit but there's still no Warp3D, compositing and ovelay (if that matters in emulation) support.

There's an open source Voodoo 3 emulator for Mame so if that gets added to UAE then you'll have Warp3D and overlay support but I think compositing requires a Radeon R100 minimum.

There's seven different version available, Classic, AmigaOne, Sam440, Sam460, Pegasos2, X1000 and X5000.  Then there's the A1222 version that's currently in alpha/beta.  There are also the unreleased versions for the IBM Elap PDA, the LimePC netbook and the Mac Mini G4.  That's eleven in all but I seem to recall that years ago Bill Buck claimed that it ran on Efika so if confirmed it would bump the known number up to 12.

Oh lordy.  I wonder how much that slows down the coding process / how much code can be compiled to work on all platforms and how much has to be rewritten?  I'm sure that number is out there somewhere, all I really wanted to say is that if I had to support that many versions, I'd probably shoot myself in the head.  :(

I would be very happy to see a release for the MacMini.
