Amiga DevCon 2016: October 6-7
« on: September 12, 2016, 05:50:51 PM »
via hyperion entertainment blog...

AmiWest 2016 (October 7 to 9) is fast approaching and so is Amiga DevCon 2016 (October 6 and 7). The location is Sacramento, California, USA. Please note, as always, the DevCon is a 100% volunteer effort as is the AmiWest show itself.

Some information about the DevCon from the AmigaOS Documentation Wiki:

  • A detailed tour of AmigaOS 4 with tutorials. We will be going through the Amiga Future programming articles by Michael Christoph. If you’d like to get a jump on them see the Amiga Future Programming Articles.
  • The anatomy of an Amiga disk device driver. We will be dissecting the p5020sata.device which is a SATA device driver used in the upcoming AmigaOne X5000. This isn’t just any custom made driver. It is melding between Linux libata and the traditional AmigaOS trackdisk device drivers.
  • Hans de Ruiter will be presenting his tutorials on Warp3D Nova. For anyone that wants to program for Warp3D Nova be sure to obtain/borrow/steal a card for the DevCon. See the Warp3D Nova press release for assistance on choosing a card.
  • Personal Projects. You are encouraged to bring your own personal projects to the DevCon where we, as a group, may be able to help you out.

See you there!

since we already had a news item for this, i moved your post into the existing thread. considering that steven solie, hans de ruiter, tony wyatt, and christian zigotzky will be there (among others), it should be a great event.

Darn, I was hoping for a Dubcon.

I dont mean to be negative as this does sound great and could be a lot of fun but...   Considering I am relatively recently back to playing around with Amiga again.  What good would this be to me to drop a $1k to go since I can not even get my hands on a modern Amiga that could run OS4?

In the meantine you could do it under emulation as now WinUAE/FSUAE are supporting AmigaOS 4.1 for Classics.

@DStastny

it's a fair point. when i decided to get a next-gen amiga back in 2009, i wasn't able to get new hardware then, either. acube had sold out of their SAM440-flex boards just like they've sold out of SAM460 boards and A-EON has sold out of X1000 systems these days. so i purchased a lightly used SAM system instead. i saved money, and loved it.

there are rumors the X5000 is just around the corner, but if that will be too costly in any case for you, i highly recommend watching the classifieds on amigaworld.net, amibay, and elsewhere for opportunities to purchase a used system if you're still interested in purchasing a NG machine.

if you just want to try it out, go for the UAE route as kamelito suggests. it's not officially supported, and it has a lot of limitations (including performance), but it can give you an idea of what AOS4 is like and you can use it for coding. my UAE instance, for example, is primarily to run codebench. :)

You can use UAE to run OS4 or 3.x, or buy a cheap Mac and install MorphOS to get your fix.

First thanks all for comments.   I appreciate the ideas my qualm is really my desire to be able to use the new Warp3d drivers and bring some stuff I did with Clang to the Amiga platform.   WinUAE 68k wont cut it nor MorphOS as I am not interested in old Macs(No offense I hate Apple and I would burst into flame if I used old Mac hardware even for noble purpose) :lol:.   Ill just keep patiently waiting.   My comment was more just from frustration of a really neat event but essentially being frozen out due to lack of hardware that the event is for.  Maybe in a year or two if new hardware is available.

Thanks again for all your inputs for now Ill keep playing with 3.x.

I don't think that we have to wait that long. We will know more during Amiwest and once New HW is out second hand market may grow.

You could become a legend and write a passthrough wrapper for UAE so the new Warp3DNova uses the host DirectX/OpenGL drivers. ;)

@SACC-guy

that is a good point. the devcon starts in just a little over a week from now, and for folks interested in the state of the amiga platform and how to develop software with it, this is a terrific experience. but folks need to sign up while there are still seats left. hans de ruiter will be there. and steven solie. and lyle hazelwood. and tony wyatt.

if you still haven't made plans to come to the devcon -- or amiwest itself -- now is the time. visit amiwest.net/reservations today to sign up.

btw aros build system has received lately some support for multiple compilers except gcc, primarly with llvm and clang in mind. im not sure of its state. so far i have been only using gcc 6.1.0 to compile binaries for x86 and 68k. with a prospect to try to use vbcc for some modules one day. however i dont know if and how clang may be used with os4 or morphos.
