PARNET
« on: December 29, 2002, 09:41:28 PM »
Does anybody out there remember PARNET?  I used it years ago more or less as a novelty.  Now I have an application that I think would put it to good use.  I still have it and the special parallel cable.  Maybe someone has improved on it since I played with it.  As I remember you could control another Amiga from the Amiga you are operating.  I seem to remember being able to access drives and run programs remotely.  If this is so then I think I could really use it now.  Any thoughts out there on this or am I just showing my age?

That sounds about right.  I still have the cable in the bundle that runs around the room, and I still ocasionally use same.  You can run programs remotely provided you have the nessessary drivers on the Amiga you are using.  You can run file mangment from a remote computer, and yes, access drives.  I remember one demo I did where the Club 500 was searching my 1200's hard drive and I was accessing the A500's CD rom.

Parnet, still one of the best free networking packages out there.   :-)

Tesral,
Do you know if there have been any improvements on parnet or what the last version # was?  I need to look at the one I have to see if it does have a version # on it.  Do you know if the drivers you mentioned are with the parnet program?  Maybe someone else will know what they are.

I want to link two 2000's together that both have GVP combo cards in them.  Since the combos have extra parallel ports on them I was thinking of using them as dedicated PARNET ports thus leaving the other palallel port available for printers.

If possible I want to be able to operate and see what is happening on my second 2000 from my primary 2000.  Because of the other monitors involved with the toaster I jut dont have room for another monitor.  I can use a keyboard/monitor A/B switch but it would still be great to have the second 2000 under control.

Hi,
You might want to checkout ProNet it can use a Parnet
cable its available on Aminet at comm/net/ProNET34.lha
heres an excert from the readme

ProNET is an easy-to-install and efficient low-cost network system similar
to ParNet.  The most important use is sharing devices like hard disks,
floppies and CD-ROM drives between computers in the network.

If you like it I would also download comm/net/ProNET-C.lha
a GUI front end for Pronet

I use Pronet with a Parnet cable to connect my 2 Towered A1200s with
no problems

Hi Dunx,
Thanks a lot for the tip.  I'll take a look at it.  Apparently you like Pronet better.  Are there some advantages?

Pronet is a bit more flexible on how you set up shared drives and stuff.
I can't remember exactly, but you might use a differently wired cable from a Parnet one??

Parnet also seemed to have a problem when executing files which were stored on the remote machine, it would often bring up packet error requesters.  There was a patch to stop that which kinda helped.

I have all the Parnet software here if you need it, I often use it when working with old machines.  Not overlay fast, it's about 16k/sec.
Cheaper than ethernet though.

@Dunx:
You're right, just checked and Parnet/Pronet do use the same cable.

Sorry, I was thinking of SANA II peer to peer networking who's parallel cable is different.

Heh, can ParNet or ProNet be setup up to use the host machines TCP/IP stack?  That would be alot cheaper than buying another NIC.
