def-icons
« on: August 28, 2016, 10:39:07 PM »
Hi All, I have copied all of Ken's icons (def icons) to my ENV-Archive/Sys directory.  Now I
am trying to edit them to get them to correspond with the programs I wish to use on them
like Multiview, and Unarc.  But I am not making any progress.  Some of the files that open these programs when I click on them have a different looking icon shell with a "Defaut Tool Type" request box at the top and there is the path to the program.  I tried to copy this exact
path into the "Tool Types" box on the other icons but and it does set them up, but still no go
with getting the program to open the files... Any advise or help would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Brad Hansen

Be sure you have the correct icon.library in your libs that will support the png icon sets. I'd bet your using an older one.

Thank you, but what exact version of icon.library would that be?

I don't think that's your problem, I'll try to send you a screenshot how to configure these later.  But every Amiga should be running the latest version of the Peter K. icon.library, for best performance & compatibility.  :)

You can download the latest version from the thread here:

http://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?t=64079

or on Aminet, here:  http://aminet.net/package/util/libs/IconLib_46.4

def_icons are configured through the SYS:Prefs/Env-Archive/Sys/  folder.

For example in my 2nd screenshot below you'll see I've configured .mp3's to automatically open in AMPlifier and .mod files to automatically open in DeliTracker2.  Most picture formats I default to open in Multiview since I have the WarpDT's loaded for that.  Works great this way for me, and I don't have to assign icons to each individual file just to get them to open in the programs of my choosing.  Obviously your mileage may vary.  ;)

Edit: If you're having additional problems it may help to post screenshots of what you're seeing and what version of Workbench, etc. :)

Mike, Thanks for this, but that's my issue, my icons do not open with this "default tool" box to
enter this path in.  Why is that?
Much appreciated.

Did you change the icon type when you copied them over? Post a screenshot of what you see and your OS version.

Mike, Thanks for the help.  I have no screen saver and no idea how to do that.  Just spent
a half hour on Aminet trying to find one, no luck with any one that made any sense.  I am running OS 3.9 all the boing bags and updates Loaded all of Ken's icons and his icon.library.  What exactly do you mean by "Icon type"?
Appreciate it

Barring all of those screen-shotting tools on Aminet, just point your camera phone at the screen and take a photo. ;)

Mike, Yeoman's work, thanks for hanging in there.  Here are my images, again I am running
0S3.9 with all the Boing Bags installed.  I copied all Ken's def_icons into the Env-Archive/sys
folder.
Much appreciated

You've already answered your own question.  In your second screenshot you can see the icon type:  "Tool".  I've highlighted it for you.  Def_icons need to be "project" type icons, to which you assign a default tool.  See the additional screenshot from my system.

Did you use some kind of installer utility to copy these icons?  If so, it might've mucked them up.  It might be possible to open each one in IconEdit and change them back from Tools to Projects.  There may also be some utilities that allow you to do this en masse.  My suggestion would be to just re-download the entire archive from Aminet and copy them overtop of what you have currently.  That's probably going to be easier/faster.
