MorphOS the next Big Thing?
« on: February 28, 2004, 01:03:49 AM »
I just caught the 'predictions' episode of "The ScreenSavers". Columnist John C. Dvorak said that Morphos was going to be the next revolution.. or some such... I didn't think anyone outside of the Faithful(tm) even knew about morphOS.. or AmigaDOS for that matter... :-)

I don't know how 'big' it is going to be, but one thing I can say for sure is that it is most likely to become 'bigger' before getting smaller. ;-)

I hope MorphOS does become popular because it really is a nice OS.

Only time will tell

Next big thing...from Europe...he said it right
before TSS went to commercial. This is coming
from a guy that has predicted the death of Apple
Computer more than a few times. Draw your own
conclusions (out on a limb with lots of pissed
off, hungry beavers comes to mind: )

Nothing really, it was just a throaway line before a commercial. "A new thing from Europe... runs on PPC". That's about it. I wasn't really sure he wasn't kidding. Dvorak does have a strange sense of humor...

If there were any real apps for it, it could definately take a sort of "poor man's Mac" approach to the market.  same thing for OS4, but it's not as pretty as MOS yet.  And doesn't have much for apps either.

Also, Dvorak is an idiot.  Anybody who keeps up on his columns will attest to this.  Someone probably mentioned MOS to him, showed him a screenshot and said "it runs on PPC for under $600!!" and he decided to put it on the show as filler, just to show how 'with it' he is.  feh.

Dvorak is also very crabby.  For the most part his columns in PC Magazine are just endless rants.  I can rant with the best of them, but he just gets out of hand.

Very few computers will be on the desktop in 10 years. Today's workstation capacity will be in wristwatches, on the wall, off the wall, and so on.

That's the craziest thing I've ever heard. Who's going to stand next to a wall-mounted terminal and type multi-page documents, books, work on spreadsheets... :-?

Essentially, we're still using the typewriter format - output above the keyboard, sat at the desk. There's a reason why it's popular.

well, it's not totally crasy. even now there are cel phones in which you can give voice commands (mostly to call someone, of course) and record notes that you speak. it's fairly minor at the moment, but eventually, this technology will get more powerful.
although, for REAL serious work, I can't see not having some sort of work station. even if you speak instead of type. you have to be able to control the work environment. that will always be true.
