A1200 user with some questions
« on: February 27, 2004, 07:34:47 PM »
Hi guys/girls

I've been out of the loop since 2002 and was wondering whats been happening since. Last time i popped in.

The rights to Amiga has been bought from Gateway, Amiga Action was in publication.

The Amiga one was rumoured to be coming out soon and advanced orders where being taken by Eyetech.

I have the following system and would really like to know where i can go with this system. I currently use a PC and a PowerMac 8500. I got the Mac, mainly because i felt it was a step back toward something Amiga-ish.

A1200, hacked into a full PC tower.
Blizzard 1260, with upgraded 66mhz crystal.
32mb Ram
1.1 Maxtor HDD, 2.3 Seagate HDD
IDEFIX97
FlickerFixer/SVGA adapter
9 pin PC Keyboard Adaptor

i used this system up till about 1998-99. Until i could nolonger do my 3d work on the system and defected over to the defective PC!!

I know i could get a PPC card for the A1200, but last time i checked they where £200 or more and i just can't afford that kind of money.

I'd simply like to know whats the current situation, there's WB 4.0 advertised on Amiga.org's site..whats it all about/specs??

I've also read about the AmigaOne and people complaining at the price..

I'd be REALLY greatful for a quick update on whats been happening since i last checked in 2002.

Many thanks
James

My Amiga is being held in cryogenic stasis until there is a cure for the cancer that afflicts every company that touches it. ;-)

Well, not really, but my attic *is* pretty darn cold this time o year...

Check out ebay if you are still planning to go for ppc (you then could use os4 soon) Especially ebay.de. Today you can get a ppc card for the a1200 for ~150Eur if you are lucky.

Soo what about WB 4, what machine is it intended for?

Is it worth upgrading the A1200??

Is there much support for the Amiga still?

Hasn't there been any new Amiga/Amiga clones developed??

Cheers

Sure........

1. Make an announcment.
2. Wait a while.
3. Check if it can actually be done.
4. Wait for someone else to do it.
5. Start working on it while giving out hillarious progress-reports.
6. Deny that you have ever announced it
7. Blame someone else

Hang on..this MorphOS...

In a nut shell, will MorphOS turn my PowerMac into an Amiga Compatible machine? Capable of running Amiga applications and games????

If anyone can give me a quick brief on this OS i'd be greatful. Some of the site is a little confusing.

Cheers

In theory yes, in practise no ....

MorphOS only runs on the Pegasos1 and Pegasos2 boards, and to
some extent on the old Phase5-cards (CS_PPC/BPPC). Meaning
will have to resort to the old 0.4-demo, which is just a way of running
AOS3.x on the PPC-side of the cards (actually it's a bit more, but
lets keep it simple), or will have to make very good contact to one
of the core-developers giving you a current version for these cards.

MorphOS will allow you to use system-friendly SW written for AmigaOS
and for Amigas with PPC (WarpOS/PowerUP), for further insight it might
be usefull to have a look into the forums at:
morphzone

Cheers all for the info

After going on to the MorphOS forums, dont think i'll bother getting the Amiga out from storage..

With the Amiga situation as it is, i dont see upgrading the A1200 wise move.

Hence me hoping to use the Mac. The way things are going the Amiga seems to be using a lot of the same stuff as they are..

Thanks
James

Well, that's the MorphOS lot for you.  There is a lot of rivalry between the two "camps", and it seems from the forums that the AmigaOS and MorphOS lot don't get on too well.  Ignore the bickering, flamewars etc and the only place to discuss both in relative peace is here on amiga.org (ann.lu is a flamefest, and the other sites are pro-AmigaOS or pro-MorphOS and woe betide those who mention the other)

Anyway, my advice:

If you want to upgrade, and the PPC cards really are that cheap on eBay, then get one of those and then you'll be able to run OS4.0 BPPC version when it is released, which will be PPC-native and will fly on even the slowest BPPC card.

If you like it and the software support starts to return, you can buy an AmigaOne in the future (such as the MicroA1 which hopefully should be A500-type pricing once it goes into mass-production)

@chris

I somehow doubt that he was complaining about "the MorphOS lot" ....
it rather seems that he came to the conclusion that there is little sense
in unstuffing something as outdated as his A1200, when there are
allready better/faster options available.

IMO starting to update an (allmost) naked Amiga now is the worst of
all option (expensive, slow, unreliable, hard to maintain).

Don't forget that prices that were considered low-end in the 80' are now
actually allmost high-end (just have a look at what you can get from
your PC-dealer for 500-700Euro), and they MicroA1 will have to some-
thing else attracting the masses, before he can be sold in such numbers
that would attract the masses ....

Hi there

Didn't have to much of a bad experiance on MorphOS forum. But as Kronos said. I don't see the point in upgrading my A1200 at this time.

I mean it's towered and runs at a reasonable 65mhz with an 060 blizzard installed. But PPC boards seem to be really expensive, STILL after all this time!

My current Power Mac 8500, i bought a month and a half ago. It now has a PPC 604e 200mhz and 176mb ram, with a Voodoo5 5500 64mb. After all these upgrades, i don't think its come close to costing me more then £50. In comparison to the cost of upgrading my A1200..it's almost silly.
£50 wouldn't even get me the PPC processor. Which for the mac i might point out cost me £6.46p off ebay LOL.

Hence my decision that upgrading the Amiga 1200 just isn't a good use of my money.

I really hope they do sort something out..Possibly a MorphOS that will run on Mac's.

Cheers
James
