I must be losing my touch (A500 question)
« on: April 27, 2016, 12:42:05 AM »
Notice I didn't say AmigaOne 500, which I also have… I just bought an original (or so the box says, still has the $497 sticker on it, will post pics later) Amiga 500, but currently have no monitor to hook it up to.  It DOES have an RGB to S-Video cable, but of course none of my existing TVs have an SiVideo input.  So I tried hooking it up via RCA cables.

It boots up with no issues, but for one:  the video.  I don't thin it's a sync problem, because I can't see it.  It's monochrome (duh!  the video's mono) and flickers intermittently.  It's just not displaying.

Has anyone else had a problem with the composite video?  Would an S-Video to HDMI converter work on modern TVs, or should I get a 1080/1084 RGB monitor that I know will work?  I just realized something.  I don't know if this is an NTSC or PAL system, but that shouldn't … scratch that.  It's NTSC.  But as I started to say, that shouldn't matter.  I had a PAL Amiga 1200 that displayed flawlessly on composite video.

I feel ashamed of myself.  I've owned Amigas since 1986, and at some point had several at once.  This should be simple to fix without spending any more money (which I'm of course going to do ANYway but you know what I mean)

Hi Stan,

I have had my A500 for over twenty now. The the center part of my composite video jack got bent too far because an Audio RCA plug was plugged in by accident (me) :)  If you look close, the center conductor lead on a composite video cable is slightly smaller in diameter. I goofed with trying to re-bend the center conductor of my composite video jack with an electronics dental pic. It helped. You would be happier with a 1084, though. I have been happy with my 1084 for over 20 years. Hope this helps.

Cheers!!

John

It does sound an awful lot like a NTSC signal on a PAL display.
An A1200 can do both PAL and NTSC.

Pay the money and get yourself an Indivision ECS.  Allows you to display on almost any modern monitor as well as adding additional high resolution modes (HighGFX, Super Plus, HD720, etc.).

Or you can beat your head against the wall and struggle with the thing for hours to kludge something else together, that works half as well and costs nearly as much.  Some people enjoy that!

I checked Agnus, and she's rev. 8370.  NTSC model.  :)

I used to me that much of a masochist but not anymore.  Now I'm only partly a masochist :D  If the external S-Video converter I have coming on Friay (Thursday?) doesn't work I'll probably wait for my student loan refunds to come in then get a 1080/1084.  Can't be an Amiga without an RGB monitor, anyway :)  I *am* curious about the ACA 500 and 1221 expansion.  I don't think I can last too long with 512K and one floppy :D
