My A1200 is Funky
« on: March 15, 2016, 08:59:20 PM »
Hi All, I am visiting you from Amiga Forever version of AmiKit.  Which is very cool.  But I am running it under Windows 7 running in virtual mode on an iMac so it's a little clunky.  I am trying to get my second A1200 up to speed for possible sale.  Both floppy drives read and write no problem running Workbench 3.1.  However if I connect my 3.9 configured CF card all I get is a red screen.  And if I connect my 1230 board with 32 megs of ram I get nothing, dead as a door nail.  Could some one direct me to where I might want to start trouble shooting these issues?
Much appreciated.

Power supply?  In other words, what you're saying is that it works fine with no expansions, but as soon as you start adding stuff it flakes out on you?

I'd try with a different PSU first, and of course plan on replacing those pesky caps, if you haven't already.  ;)

Or maybe corroded tracks related to the trapdoor expansion?, this A1200, has its caps replaced?, if not, time to check them.

Thank guys, for the help. I used my brand new power supply.  So that's
a no go.  Just sent off my good A1200 board for re-capping.  So I guess that's
next up for this one.
Appreciate it.

Hey All, been a while cause my good A1200 if off in England getting re-capped. Didn't know it would take so long. So I am coming to you today from my second A1200. The one that would not load the Harddrive or the excellerator.  This is what I did yesterday. I removed the metal shield from the computer. That's it, then everything started working. Now I can see some folks are having real problems with their machines and I can only feel for them. I mean before when I Added the harddrive nothing would happen, I mean nothing. When Iadded the excellerator I would get a purple screen that's all. So what can I say, this is a magic fix, I don't think so. But I wish all users with issues the same simple fix.

Grounding issue from the metal shield, maybe?  I didn't know anyone was still running their system with one of those on, lol.  ;)

Mike, Really... One interesting thing, I'm Running my Individual AGA MK2cr and no signs of screen tearing
at all. The reason I sent my "Good" A1200 to get re-capped.
Cheers

It was always a good idea to bend up the RF shielding in the trapdoor area because of this exact issue.

Or insulate it with electrical tape. As I've done.

Yep, done that too... bad design (on the RF shielding) because it comes dangerously close to shorting with something installed in the trapdoor.

First time I ever installed something in a A1200 I was like:

oh, wow, I don't like that...
