Memory --I'm running low
« on: March 08, 2016, 02:58:31 AM »
I just set up a classic workbench install on a new cf card  and it seems it eats more memory than I want it to.  How do I find out where the memory is being used.

I'm running an A600 2meg chip and 2 meg Sram card.  Seems it chews up about 1 meg just loading Workbench

large harddisk buffers are the usual suspects for me when the memory  get's that low. start without S-S and tell us about the available memory then?

Running a backdrop pic? this can eat some mem. Also running hi res laced with 16 colors.  workbench 3.1 is lighter than 3.5 and up.

What version of ClassicWB? IMHO that package contains too much bloat for lightly expanded systems. Might be better to switch to a plain 3.1 + BetterWB, which is much less resource intensive. Alternatively, you're going to need to start researching tools like Fblit, TLSFmem, Env-Handler, optimizing different Workbench resolutions and screen depths, etc.

Or buy one of the new A600 accelerators currently being produced that provide up to 128MB of fast ram. ;)

I think my partitions are running 150 buffers.  According to sysinfo.  I don't know if that is correct though because I ran hdtoolbox and it said that there were 30 buffers in each partition.

Well I Finally got my 020 accelerator installed so my memory problems are greatly reduced.

Jens 020... I couldn't wait for a vampire.

Still I would like to get my memory footprint down so when I run with the 020 disabled.  I will only have 4 megs then.

Check what's in WBStartup and remove anything you don't need. Monitor drivers in Devs:Monitors also eat up some RAM. Check Devs: Datatypes and Devs: Dosdrivers as well.

Each partition needs it's own buffers too, so if you really want to save memory keep it down to x2 partitions if possible. But really, advice like that should only be necessary for a 1MB machine, whereas you have 11MB with the ACA620, plus your 2MB chip memory.

What filesystem are you using?

Ah...so you're going to disable it sometimes leaving you with the SRAM card...I follow.

For low memory A600 setup try to use the Green Amiga Alien Edition ClassicWB setup. Specifically made for low memory.
http://classicwb.abime.net/classicweb/gaae.htm

Just get another CF card, set it up and see if you like it.
A500 KS 2.1, 1MB Chip, 68000

A1200 KS 3.1, Blizzard IV 50MHz 64MB RAM

I'm running PFS3AIO and I seem to be getting CRC errors.   I think  I will switch to my old
CF card and use it a while to see if the errors go away.  It may just be me but it seems like PFSAIO seems to be slower than SFS.

I'm probably going to switch to a lighter workbench than the one I'm using now.

It's funny this version(WB LITE) doesn't automount my CF cards.  I have to go into shell and mount then it works.  I guess it is set up that way.

CRC errors didn't go away.  That leaves the 020 or the CF adapter as a possible problem.  Just ordered a new IDE cable the connect to a known good CF adapter.  Maybe that will solve the problem.

My luck it will be the 020 though.  The thing does get fairly hot.  I will put some sort of cooling on it.
