Used A500 issues
« on: December 25, 2015, 12:41:09 AM »
I bought a used Amiga 500, buyer tested it to the best of his abilities (showed kickstart on the screen, drive clicking).

At any rate, my Indivision ECS is in, plugged in my A500 to actually use it but my display is strange and keyboard doesnt work.

For example, I have kickstart 2.04 roms and at the kickstart screen the floppy disk is mangled and the Amiga checkmark is in bad shape.   My caps lock is blinking, pattern is 2 quick blinks.

Any clues as to what could be ailing my new to me A500?

Check using the 23-pin video output and the HD15 (VGA)  connector of the Indivision simultaneously. If stock output is good and Indi is bad, remove and reseat the Indi, and check it's ground strap. If built-in video output is bad... Well then you have other problems, lol. ;)

Actually, probably a good idea to just remove and reseat everything. I know sometimes the Denise->Indi->motherboard stack can be a bit tricky. Also make sure nothing is shorting on the top of the stack, etc.

Without the Indivsion board, I still have the same issues.

Hrm.  Any memory expansion in the trap door?  Try removing it?

Is it a Rev. 8 motherboard with a possibly leaky battery?

There's always the old "Agnus drop test", haha.  ;)

No mem expainsion.. Rev 5 mobo.  I've pressed down on all the chips.   I have a PLCC extractor so I'll remove agnus and reseat it.  Luckily a local Amiga group has either a replacement A500 for me or chips.  I'm hoping the soldered ram isnt bad.   Also when sitting at the KS screen, keyboard doesnt work, only the caps light is blinking twice.  Maybe the chip ram is bad?

Do you have another power supply at disposal? You see, those voltages must be right. I had one supply which caused blurry image on any Amiga I tried, another bad brick was causing system crashes randomly, so one possibility here.

2 blinks suggests keyboard ram check failed.

you probably checked, is the kbd cable plugged on the right way? it is reversible.  make sure 4 wires line up with the 4 pins on  side etc.

No.  I'm going to get an ATX PSU, chop off the end of the original A500 that way I can use a new PSU.

@mechy:

Yea..checked that..plugged in correctly..  kb ram check means, chip ram is bad, correct?
