Amiga 2000 ram
« on: December 24, 2015, 11:12:04 PM »
So, discovered that my recently acquired a2000 rev 6.2 is not showing any "other mem" only chip ram. Is this normal?

Been awhile since using an A2000 but I seem to remember stock was just chip ram unless you had a ram board installed.

The obvious question is "how much ram does it have installed?"

For 6.2 the stock configuration is 1MB chip.  For older (unmodified, typically Rev. 4.x boards), it would be 512K chip/512k fast.  It's a common mod to convert that to 1MB chip.

Ok, that makes sense. So are there any in expensive ways to add more Ram so the "other mem" is used rather than showing 0? Or is this pointless?

Several ways! Some scsi cards had room for some memory.
2091 could use 512MB to 2MB by adding chips and setting the jumpers correctly.

Lots of just memory cards like 2058 adding 2MB to 8MB.

Some cpu cards had add-on memory too. I think this way was the best.

Add it through a CPU card or through just about any compatible Zorro II expansion card.  Also the Kipper2K cards that fit underneath the processor can add up to 8MB and an IDE/CF interface.  These are manufactured new and very reasonable-priced (compared to picking up a 20-year-old used card off ebay anyway, I suppose).  ;)

As a bonus, any additional RAM you add to the system will be true "fast ram", unlike with an A500 trapdoor expansion, which is "slow-fast" memory (in that it doesn't actually accelerate the system).

IF you're new to using an A2000, you can also look at the sigs of people in the forums and ask them what expansions they use.  Plenty out there for the ole' 2000's.  ;)

The problem with the cards though is you need to get one with max ram included. These days the ram is more money then the cards or very hard to find a full set.

Ya, the  A209x SCSI controller that's in my a2000HD has spots for ram but I would have no idea where I could find any for it.

A stock ZorroII bus can handle 8 megs total including Graphics card mem and all mem for zorro card auto config. Find an old G-Force 030 combo and you can get anywhere from 16Mb on up!

According to http://amiga.resource.cx/exp/a2091 the A2091 "supports 256k×4 (44256) chips, 120 ns or faster"

Putting "44256" into ebay pulls up tons of listings.  ;)

This is the fastest ones I can find listed http://www.ebay.ca/itm/18PC-NEW-M5M44256AP-10-MITSUBISHI-256x4-100NS-DRAM-/131258440234?hash=item1e8f9cda2a:g:VAMAAOSwbqpT2~vY
They are 100ns
The rest all seem to be between 70 and 80ns

100ns is good for vanilla zorro. faster is only good really for accelerators.

i have 1mx4's in dips and   think i have 256x4's in 80ns or less,i can check if you like.  just let me know.
your probably get them cheaper off ebay though.

i would recommend getting kipper2's setup or a gvp hcII+8 scsi controller, it supports luns well and is faster than the 2091...also holds 8mb of 30 pin simms that are cheap. grab a 030 accelerator if you can afford it.

100ns is actually slower then 70ns. The lower it gets, the faster it is.
However, if you only want to use it on a RAM card, 100ns is fast enough.
60ns ~ 70ns is only better for accelerators cards.
