Question for A-eon
« on: October 18, 2015, 11:28:14 AM »
I contacted Steam to find out if they would consider porting Steam client to the Amiga.
Awaiting a reply.    who thinks this is a great idea?

It would be cool in itself of course, but it doesn't mean games would work on NG Amigas. They still have to be made so there is a risk we will have a client but nothing to use on it.

Without porting of games to NG machines it would just be a bloated chat client tho ^^
I have a hard time seeing that they will even make a proper reply, odds are that the person getting this email in the support end don't even know what Amiga/NG is and they have nothing to say about porting to new systems.

I think a Steam like client for Amiga (cross platform between the different flavours) is a great idea.

I dont really see how Steam spesifically can be useful for Amiga since there aint anything available for it to purchase. Yes, its a really good chat client, I agree.

But if anything; Amistore or phoenix's store client should be adapted to have such a low impact chat client included.

EA's attempt for a store/chatclient, Origin, was aweful. Tho its over a year since Ive used it since Ive not played Battlefield or games much in general.
But Steam I pretty much load up every time I power on my Wintel PC.

great feedback btw.

my angle is that yeah they have a steam client which allows Linux users to run PC games and vs vers.
well seeing Amiga has a vast catalogue of games, why not have a steam retro section for Amiga or C64 games.  virtualised machine can be used to emulate the game through a steam client allowing you to play on any platform.

It would bring a whole group of community to Retro platform whom probably never heard of the Amiga,  would inspire developers to create sequels to old games and also may bring a steam client to the Amiga platform.

I don't know about anyone else but yes its great to play on an Amiga hardware, but to preserve an entire catalogue of games for future generations would be a great idea.
Clean exact copy of a game not hacked versions.

Talking back on track though I thought the point of steam was transparency gaming allowing pc or Linux games to run on any hardware and any os so if the client was ported to the Amiga, then playing PC games would be possible.

Maybe if we all started to tweet steam on twitter we get a reply..  social media is wonderful for being noticed.

Its certainly worth a try, doesnt cost anything to send mails, twitt etc

But unless you happen to get in contact with someone with a strong amiga background within Valve I dont see how it will get off the ground.
Just look at spotify; got a NG machine and people within that had Amiga background.
But a large company will think about cost overhead when it comes down to updates to the client having to accomodate for the Amiga platform each time too.

BUT, doesnt hurt to try ofcourse  ;)

And when Valve decides it is not profitable and shut the service down, everyone who bought Amiga software on steam will no longer be able to use that software.

Steam would be great on NG systems if they let all three platforms in. I think something like the Ami Store client would be a better idea though. Just games is fun, but we need a single place for users to look at the apps that are available. Its a mess in my opinion for any new user to find things. We all know where things are only because of the years of talking to one another. Think of the problems someone picking up an Amiga NG machine now would run into.

I will say OS4.1 has better support for finding new software than the rest currently. I want something that runs on all 4 and is in sync.

There are so many things wrong with this idea I don't even now where to start.
Of course until you explained that your email to Steam (Valve) was related to a potential retro marketplace most people pointed out the client on its own is pretty much useless.

And even after you explained your retro angle it is still a futile idea as Steam (Valve) would have to chase distribution rights for the games that would have a limited return.

Ideally, you would have contacted someone who is already part of the way there, i.e. Cloanto. Creating a steam-like client and portal for a game marketplace and retro gaming community would be more aligned with their existing goals.

You don't use Grunch on your MorphOS machines?

Good question.
In any case, I don't use Steam on my x64 systems (I'm not a big gamer), so it isn't that important to me.

Now an NG port of Blender? That would get my attention.

To grab Trevor attention,  maybe A-eon can look into development for a steam client for NG Amiga.  After all no point having a new machine with no games to play on it.
