Boing Bag Boom!?
« on: February 23, 2004, 08:19:14 PM »
I got brave last week and updated my A1200 OS3.9 BB1 to BoingBag 2 and now it won't boot.  It gets through the startup-sequence and user-startup but then just hangs at the loadwb (no errors, guru, etc.).  Any ideas of where to look first?  Are the files that BB2 replaces archived anywhere that I can copy them back?  :(

System: A1200, Blizzard 060/50+SCSI, 2M CHIP, 128M FAST, 20GB IDE HD.
Time to move on.  Bye Amiga.org.  :(

Good luck!
I did the same thing on my A4000 (16MB, stock 040, scanmagic) and I can't find any changes at all.
At least it did 'something' on yours.
I'll be following this thread very closely!!

I hope you didn´t unpack BB2 with Unarc in BB1? IIRC there is a bug in BB1-unarc, use the good old LHA.
Mainframe: Amiga 3000 Tower, CSPPC233/060, 144+2MB, 36GB UW, Prometheus, Voodoo5 5500, 10Mbit, 24xCDr, OS 4.0 ....Amiga since 1987.

There's something sadly ironic about that, but I'm too busy eating Smarties and thinking about playing some more Counter-Strike to bother working it out.

@adolescent

I had a similar problem as you, but I got a guru at
setpatch. I had to replaced c:setpatch &
devs:amigaos rom update with the ones in BB1 to get it
working. I know I have something from 3.1 that's causing
the problem, but I have no idea what it is yet. I know
this because if I do a fresh install of OS3.9 & both BBs,
I can boot with no problems.

Just re-install BB1 & you should be back to where you started, or you could try replacing those 2 files
with the ones in BB1 to see if that works.

Yeah, I had tons of problems with the OS3.9 BB2 setpatch on my A4000, as well.  Is it just me, or did the BoingBags introduce more problems than they solved?

anyhow, I used a
c:setpatch SKIPROMUPDATES
in my startup-sequence, and that got my 4000 a little happier.

Thanks for the suggestions guys.

@Sundown

That is my plan, but I need WB to do it.  Unless someone knows the secret password to unpack the update zipfile.  ;)

Also, I installed this system directly from the OS3.9 CD a while back, so there shouldn't be anything "old" on it.

@Crusher

No, I used LZX to unpack it.

@Ilwrath

I'll give the SKIPROMUPDATES a try tonight.
Time to move on.  Bye Amiga.org.  :(

Hi,

Yeh it's that update alright. Messed up my graphics and all kinds of stuff. Something in the Exec update if I remember right.

@All

Well, after toying with it for a week, I decided to just re-install OS3.9 and BB1.  Using my premade emergency disk I got everything reinstalled.  The only casualty I've found so far is MUI needed to be reinstalled.  Everything else "seems" to be functioning...

Ack, that just great.  I guess I'm going to be able to experience that when I get to put 3.9 on my A4000 (can't right now, because as a fool I formatted the drive, and came to find  out my emergency disk didn't work and my workbench disk is giving out errors)

Would I really need those Boing Bags ?

If I remember correctly, cybergraphics had a problem
with the exec version number, and would not work correctly.

skipromupdates "exec.library" (from memory, I am at work)
should fix it if you are using cybergrapics.

I haven´t had any problem in installing BB1 or BB2 on any of  my computers or any of my friends and I haven´t used the emergencydisk on any of my installations. Maybe it has to do with that I have installed WB3.1 first and then 3.9 on that and then BB1 and directly, without reset, BB2 over that. I used both BB´s from Haage&Partner and not the one from Amiga. Don´t know if they are different but just maybe they are.  :-)
