newbie musician needs tips
« on: August 20, 2015, 11:21:24 PM »
Dear Friends:

I have been non-musical all of my life.
I recently started learning the keyboard.
One of my goals is to create amiga music.
I have octamed and deluxe music construction set.
I would love to make music like the ones produced by Rob Hubbard
for the commodore 64.
Any tips for newbie amiga/musician ?

Option 1:  Practice!  Also stock up on ramen.  Aren't all musicians supposed to be "starving artists"?  ;)

Option 2:  Produce one hit song and sell it to Taylor Swift.  Retire off the royalties.

The Amiga has limited audio resources. Either you can work within those limits, or you'll need to add a MIDI interface and drive external synthesizers.
DMCS is happy to work with either or both, but the internal voices are limited to four notes at a time.

It's really a question of: Do you want to see how much you can accomplish with just four voices?

Have Fun!

Do you already know how to use a tracker like Octamed/Protracker etc? If you know how the software works, you have a reasonable shot at getting started making music....

Though if you're new to tracking, strap youself in for a very long ride.

It might feel different now that you're using obsolete technology in a world full of infinite distraction though...

Get sample CDs for making mods. Also , if you plan to compose some very
advanced stuff you should also know notes (well not those ugly real ones ,
rather their alphabet counterparts C1 (do , low octave) C1is , D , Dis etc.

Learn hot to compose simple drums , that's easy , most mods have very nice drums (some even bass lines but not a must).

More than anything get some normal software to learn how to compose music you like and start from there.Once you recorded your song on synth it will be
pretty easy to make a mod file if you have good samples.Keep in mind that
four channel limitation (four samples at the same time).

I only play Guitar and Base Guitar but had no problem with any tracker and I know very little notes.Oh yeah , watch how mods you like are made to get a better picture (and steal a few tricks :-) ).

Most guys I know who played Piano (synths) used keyboard to input tones
in trackers once their songs were done. You can even use Amiga keyboard
as "secondary" synth :).

Looking forward to your future work :)
If you need bass/drum lines and are willing to give me samples I would be
glad to help.

I think from OctaMED V5 there was an 8 track mode, but I think he'll need a 68020 for that.

There are some quite amazing mods. Maybe load them up RedNova and try and figure out how they're constructed, and how they are able to make great music with just 4 tracks.

Protracker is the "de facto" standard for music: free, four voices, effects, and some tools to create edit and manipulate samples - that and a copy of audiomaster or another audio editor should help at the begin.

There are several guides on how to use trackers, you might find videos for milkytracker or modplug tracker on PC: ignore the instrument definition part and just focus on learning tracker basics: command are mostly the same from amiga times (with the exception of xm format adding volume before of the instrument number, but that's it).
