Gamecube: cooling fan replacement

Hullo,

The cooling fan in my gamecube is rather noisy, and I have thought about replacing it...

Now the problem arises; how on earth do you get the thing apart? From what I can tell there are four weird sort of screws near the bottom, but I have never seen a screwdriver that matches those...

Has anyone attempted disassembling their gamecube or know how to?

Most modding sites should have tools for sale, for instance when I got an Afterburner kit for my GBA, they had the custom screwdrivers available. Although I actually fashioned my own using a spare screwdriver and a grinding stone (AKA. my back door step ;-))

A Google search for 'gamecube screwdriver' should point you in the right direction. :-)

I wouldn't do so.
I once tried to replace a psu from an Imac :-x :lol:
These Gamecubes and so are assembled in a way to be very compact. Unless you found something dedicated to replace this with, I wouldn't be screwing in a perfectly working gc.

Eyso has a point, if you do go ahead with something like this be prepared to say goodbye to:

(a) Your warranty (for definite)
(b) Your GC (quite possibly)
(c) Your life (not as likely)

If you still have the receipt and the box, why don't you take it back to where you got it and swap it for a new one?

I've never opened up my gamecube before but there are several sites that showyou the innards of consoles, I'd imagine the fan is that not that dissimilar to a standard cpu fan.

Dreamcasts are noisy bastards. I've never heard a Gamecube before. Saturn is the most silent console ever.

Why don't you put something like a blanket over your GC? It'll be less noisy then. Sure, it might get hot, but that makes for more exciting gameplay - you have to finish your level before the thing blows up!

Er, I think you will find cartridge-based systems are somewhat less noisy. ;-)

Okay then, among CD based consoles, Saturn is silent.

I haven't owned a cartridge based console since I got an emulator for my megadrive. Damn the emulator! This PC is too noisy!

I use a few emulators... (UAE of course, Snes9x, ePSXe and even an N64 emulator, but that sucks 'cause I don't have an analogue pad.)

Of course, Nothing beats the real thing... except maybe having some actual desk space left ;-)

To the suggestions about taking it back to the store, getting it repaired, etc. That opening it myself would void warranty, etc:

You misunderstood, or maybe my post wasn't clear. It's working nicely, I just want to reduce the noise level.

It's not different at all, I think. You can see it through one of the ventilation grids and it looks just like a standard 70mm fan.

The problem is the screws that hold the thing together. I don't want to pay for a special screwdriver. It's not really that noisy, just a humming.

I just thought that it'd be fun replacing the humming fan with a more silent one, like a normal 70mm papst, but I got stuck at the special screws...
