I'm so sorry to hear of the passing of your friend, Mark. His family must be beyond devastated. My sincere condolences go out to them. Such a sad loss at no age at all. It's awful :(.

Reminds a bit of Megatraveller 1 although that was a top down RPG with spacecraft sections too. Maybe playing this plus FTL (Faster Than Light) are the modern day equivalents?
