Amiga, MagicBox, Alphagen, Aavelin
« on: February 28, 2015, 10:11:07 PM »
Hello group,

Is the Amiga and the MagicBox Alphagen/Aavelin closely or distantly related? I need to clone my Aavelin HD that has 4 partitions for a backup. It's a 40GB WD Caviar, the 4 partitions are 2GB, 541.3MB, 14.7GB and the rest is unallocated. Connecting it to Windows 7 disk management just to inspect it showed the partitions and their sizes but had no file system information, it wouldn't mount either. I have cloning and formatting utilities (both free and paid) to use but I need to start with the proper file format. I know the partitions have to be the same size or larger also. Any thoughts? Thanks!

Alphagen Magicbox based on A1200 motherboard IS an Amiga, and the drives are Amiga partitions.
The Aavelin is probably based on PC architecture.
So, I would say, distantly related.
A500 KS 2.1, 1MB Chip, 68000
A600 KS 3.1, 2MB Chip, ACA630 32MB RAM
A1000 KS 1.3, 8MB RAM
A1200 KS 3.1, Blizzard IV 50MHz 64MB RAM
A2000 KS 2.1, 68030 25MHz, 6MB RAM
A3000 KS 3.1, 68030 25MHz, 16MB RAM
A4000 KS 3.0, 68040 25MHz, 16MB RAM
CDTV KS 3.1, 4MB RAM
CD32
(AROS BOX) Dead :(

Did you try Clonezilla? I've used it to clone Windows drives and some people here have mentioned that it also works on the Amiga.

If it is an amiga formatted drive then you could just mount it under winuae and make an image directly.
That's all there is to it.
Near as I can tell this is where I write something under the guise of being innocuous, but really its a pot shot at another persons/peoples choice of Amiga based systems. Unfortunately only I cant see how transparent and petty it makes me look.

I did use Clonezilla! it worked fantastic. I was going above and beyond trying to prep the target drive with the right size and format of partitions only to waste my time. I used Clonezilla in the advanced mode and had to select a few extra options that are not available in the beginner mode. Good thing, it perfectly cloned the drive with the correct formatting, partitions and all data. My MagicBox Aavelin doesn't know the difference. Thanks for all the advise to everyone who responded. BTW, the Aavelin source drive appears to be the "BTFS" file system (according to GParted partition software)

Not to derail your thread, but the mention of Clonezilla is a biggie.

Most Amigans don't realize it's platform agnostic and can image any Amiga drives just fine.  I use it regularly to image my OS4, MOS and legacy/emu drives and I've never had a single issue with it.  Should be in any Amigans toolkit if full disk/image based archiving needs doing.

understood. I didn't mention it in my original post, only upon spaceman88's recommendation. Thanks
