Really Silly X-Surf 100 Question
« on: February 21, 2015, 11:49:35 PM »
Let's pretend for a second I know nothing.  (I've been googling this for the last half hour so maybe I don't).

I'm trying to set up the X-Surf 100 card in an Amiga 2000 with GVP 68030 50 Hz. accelerator.

I've download the drivers from wiki.icomp.de and extracted them.  But what do I do with those files, do they go somewhere?  When I run the x-surf test file, everything checks out except that RTL8019 is not found.

I realize that after I get these drivers in place I can then set up EasyNet.  (I only want to do this to eliminate the sneakernet I currently have going on).  I won't be browsing the web.

Thanks....

Put the appropriate driver in Devs:Networks and you're good to go! I can't remember if there's a processor suffix on the filename, but you'll need to remove it. e.g., x-surf100.device_020 should be renamed x-surf100.device.

Well, after setting the Z2 jumper on for the Zorro 2 bus in the A2000 and installing the card, you should have de-archived the wiki file of device drivers and a SANA II file for the AmiTCP ver 3 that EasyNet uses.  The caches of the 030 CPU must be disabled (CLI>CPU NOCACHE FASTROM or add the line in your Startup-Sequence)

The correct device x-surf-100.device_020  or for AmiTCP, x-surf-100.device_a020 needs to go in DEVS:Networks renamed as "x-surf-100.device" and for the SANA boost you will need a directory in ENVARC: called SANA2 -- envarc:sana2 with the "x-surf-100.config" file stored there.

As to how the EasyNet software references the x-surf-100.device, I can't recall because the use of AmiTCP ver 3 precludes use of the lpr.device to access my network printers, so I use Roadshow68k.

You should have a screen for network devices like this one: http://shop.amigakit.com/images/netpcm003-page5.jpg  and be able to select it there.

I got it going.  Easy net made it easy, I didn't realize I could cycle through and it would have a Belkin router in its setup.  I was impressed.  And yup, just copy the device file over to networks:dev and I was all set.

So next issue....ugh....  What I'd like to do is use Amiga Explorer (or something similar if it exists) to communicate over TCP/IP.  The computers can ping each other on my network and I'm using Windows 7 (64bit) with an Intel I5 processor as the other PC in this network.  But Amiga Explorer complains about the TCP/IP socket not being found, though I've specified in the software.  Also I've opened the port 356 on my router as suggested by the Cloanto site.

Anybody experience this before?  Further is the a similar software package or some other way to enable network shares across these systems?

A few months (ok, longer) I tried to get my Win 7 pc to communicate with my Amiga and it flat out refused.  I researched the web and found Win 7 hates connecting to other computer OS's -- and Samba running on the Amiga didn't work either.  Either you can drop back to XP or earlier, wish for devine inspiration, or set up an inexpensive server (which is what I did) and FTP files back and forth.

If anyone has an Amiga Forever solution running on Win 7,  please say how!

P.S., I keep all my Amiga downloads on the server so I can get access from any rebuilds I am working on; it also has my movie and music collection for my Roku devices.

This connection issue is most frustrating.  There doesn't seem to be a way to share a drive with my Amiga.

Baffles me.

I've tried AExplorer and EasyNet - Hosts Manager... even though I've got the Amiga online (all the way to Aminet) I can't seem to get the two computers talk.  I don't really have the room to set up a third.  I do have a NAS unit here though...anyone ever have any luck with that?

Well I spent a few weeks trying and failed, that is why I wrote above that an inexpensive server (ZyXEL NSA325, 1 Gb connection, Raid 0/1, 2-drive, diskless) fit my needs as an Amiga depository, media server, and backup device). AmiFTP and Pete's FTP (pFTP) work quickly to access it.

Or you can wait for someone to find you a way to access your Win 7 PC from your Amiga.

Amiga Explorer works fine here with Windows 7 and Genesis. Not only should port 356 be open but you need to add a service on tcp port 356 in the Genesis config so I guess that goes in AmiTCP db somewhere.

I ended up accessing my NAS as an FTP from the Amiga.  I guess it works just as well as AExplorer in that I'd have to go get up and run AExplorer on the Amiga every time I wanted to use it anyway.  I don't like to leave vintage machines on all day.

This way if I'm on the Win 7 PC I can just park stuff on the NAS (set up a separate share for the Amiga) and pull it down next time I'm on the Amiga.  (and the reverse)

And there is always USB stick....

Still I learned lots trying.  I think, from reading Cloanto's site, amiga.org and the EAB site that Genesis might have worked.... EasyNet comes with 3.02b of AmiTCP and Cloanto's site says 4 is required.  Still I've got all the other networking features I wanted working.....

Probably the famous 030 CI-Bug. But there is a better alternative. Get the mmu.library, the 68030.library, the SetPatch from Os 3.9 and put all into LIBS:. Make sure the stuff is also loaded on startup time.

Which is normal, because there is no RTL8019 on the XSurf-100! That was the network chip on the predicessor, which was not fast ethernet, but only 10MBit ethernet, and the tool is based on the tool from the predicessor. So, don't worry, if the test says that the test passed and the cable is connected, everything is fine.

This connection issue is most frustrating.  There doesn't seem to be a way to share a drive with my Amiga.

First of all, you still need a network stack. Genesis from Os 3.9 works fine. Second, Genesis does not speak DHCP, you need to assign a static IP to the Amiga, in the Genesis prefs. Third, there is no CIFS/Samba stack for the Amiga (CIFS is the network file system Microsoft uses), but there is ftp and there is a NFS (network file system) stack, the latter was - I believe - even included in the Genesis distribution and works in general fine.

Thus, for Linux users, all you need to do is to export some part of your filing system (modify etc/exportfs) and edit the configuration of the AmigaNFS accordingly, works like a charm, Linux drives appear on the Amiga.

For Windows, I don't know, you probably have to find an open implementation of a NFS server. Given that the protocol is open, I would be surprised if there wouldn't be such a thing, probably as part of Cygwin. But then again, why would I want to use windows...
