A1000 expanded with Kipper2k Fast Ram
« on: February 12, 2015, 12:11:35 AM »
Someone gave me an A1000 that I haven't used much, it only has 512k and the old KS floppy.  The last I looked, A1000 expansions were becoming rare and getting expensive on eBay.  Has anyone tried Kipper2k's Fast Ram with CF IDE in an A1000?  Was it a good marriage and were there any gotchas?

He has a guide for installing in A2000's on his site, but I haven't seen anything for the A1000.  Probably the hardest part will be figuring out where to draw power from?  It might just be the reverse of the A500 instructions, fingers crossed.  ;)  Good luck!  :)

Kipper2K's site still lists a CPU adapter for the RAM cards;

         A1000 CPU Adapter
This adapter will sit on top of your CPU socket in the A1000 and          allow the fastmem board to sit on top without interfering with the          floppy drive cable of the floppy drive.

This should make using them in the A1000 a snap?
A2000 GVP 40MHz \'030, 21Mb RAM SD/FF, 2 floppies, internal CD-ROM drive, micromys v3 w/laser mouse
A1000 Microbotics Starboard II w/2Mb 1080, & external floppy (AIRdrive)
C-128 w/1571, 1750, & Final Cartridge III+

I did it, and Yes, there is a catch.
The board is too close to the floppy drive connector and you need to get Kipper's A1000 adapter to fit it in.
Other then that it is working fine.

A600 KS 3.1, 2MB Chip, ACA630 32MB RAM
A1000 KS 1.3, 8MB RAM
A1200 KS 3.1, Blizzard IV 50MHz 64MB RAM
A2000 KS 2.1, 68030 25MHz, 6MB RAM
A3000 KS 3.1, 68030 25MHz, 16MB RAM
A4000 KS 3.0, 68040 25MHz, 16MB RAM
CDTV KS 3.1, 4MB RAM

I would be very interested in the ways you have updated your A1000.  I  guess you also have a ROM adapter (Is it a switcher?) and you can boot from the CF?  Your 1000 boots like an A500 equipped with a hard drive?  It must have been a fun project.

My A1000 only has Kippers 8MB RAM card (the first one he made, w/o the CF card). I also have ROM adapter for it, but it's not installed because does not fit together with kippers Ram :hammer:

The A508IDE board will fit inside the a1000 by using the cpu adapter which moves it further back in the case so that it does not interfere eith the floppy drive cable coming from the floppy drive itself. I believe there are also other addons that sit elsewhere on some  A1000's so height clearance may be a concern, it is possible that by simply adding risers that issue could be solved.

The basic memory board should also fit, i would have to try it, but again, using the cpu adapter should allow it to fit

Your A508ide is a fantastic option!  Just out of curiosity, do you know if it is compatible with Supra's Turbo28 accelerator?  With just the one small sidecar for the Turbo28, it would make for a screaming A500!
