Amiga 4000 w/OS3.1 - Adding IDE CD-ROM??
« on: December 26, 2002, 04:31:55 PM »
It is my understanding that my Amiga 4000 with AmigaOS3.1 will support a standard IDE CD-ROM device. Is this true? I have attached a CD-ROM as SLAVE to a hard disk. (I have done this sort of thing on a PC many times) What is the secret to make this work? I have played with the mountlist for CD0:  but I cannot make any progress. I have no SCSI controller or devices, only IDE.  Any and all comments and explanations are welcome!

you need the atapi.device to work properly yuor IDE CD-ROM.
AmigaOS uses the scsi.device for both IDE and SCSI

Is the atapi.device part of OS3.1? Are you saying that I only need to modify the mountlist for device CD0: to reference atapi.device instead of scsi.device? Thanks for the information, but I need further details, if you can provide them. Thanks!

for Amiga OS 3.1 you have to install a cdfs system, like AsimCDFS, thats what I found to work, in OS 3.9 though I think it supports cd rom drives already
There was a time I can remember computers were fun...I miss my A1200.

Warpiper, Is it my ONLY option to install a 3rd party CD filesystem or upgrade my OS? I thought CD support (even though it may be limited) was part of OS3.1? I appreciate the help, but I would *prefer* to enable the device with a minimum of extra software. Is this possible?

You could find in aminet CDfilesystems like amicdfs for free but for attach an IDE cd-ROM you need an atapi.device.
If your drive is SCSI it works with scsi.device like a harddisk. Also IDE HD´s uses the scsi.device as well but ATAPI(IDE) CD_ROMs don´t work. You need to patch the scsi.device with instruction to recognice and drive the ATAPI mechanism and this is done by the atapi.device

I think that OS3.1 worked for scsi, but to use IDE drives, you need something to point to the atapi device, thats why you needed the CDFS drivers

You can use the idefix97 package from aminet for a demo version of atapi.device.

A requester will pop up now and then though..

I could've sworn I had an IDE CDROM working just fine with one of my A4k's running default OS3.1?
There's a CD Filesystem included with 3.1 (L:CDFileSystem) and all I had to do was change the cd0 mountlist to look at scsi.device unit 1 (via the tooltype) and stick it in DEVS:DOSdrivers.  However the filesystem doesn't have joliet support (so filenames are limited to MSDOS-style 8.3)

Isn't atapi.device only for use with those 4-way adaptors so that you can access the second IDe channel?

Hmmm.. maybe my memory is playing up

scsi.device don´t work with IDE CD-Roms, at least in my beloved A1200 until atapi.device was installed.
atapi.device is used for access ATAPI devices such as CD-ROM,ZIP,LS-120,etc under the IDE port of the A1200 & A4k or a 4-way adaptor for those Amigas

For OS 3.0/3.1 you need atapi.device.  It does not come with
3.1  You need IDEFIX97, but it is a demo and a requestor
will pop up!  Get OS3.9, it patches the scsi.device
to use ATAPI devices and CD-ROMs work great with scsi.device,
no atapi.device needed anymore.  BUT to install 3.9 you
need a CD-ROM drive!  So again use IDEFIX97 to setup the
CD-ROM and install the new OS... It is worth it.

You could also try the ATAPIPnP demo package from Aminet. I used to use this with my Amiga 4000 and IDE CD-ROM before getting OS3.5 which has ATAPI CD-ROM support in the scsi.device and the cachecdfs filesystem included. Apart from the annoying requester ATAPIPnP put up every so often, it worked like a charm.

A4000D: 030/25MHz, 16MB RAM, Indivision Mk1, 8GB CF as HDD and IDE CD-ROM.

Replace atapi.device in cd0: mountkist with scsi.device
