68K Data Base
« on: December 16, 2014, 07:10:07 PM »
I am setting up a few small projects in Softwood's Final Data 3 (Birthdays, computer collection, etc). SuperBase 4 Pro and even MFF+ were overkill. Does anyone like something other than Final Data? It works, but looks so sterile. Ideas?
A2000 GVP 40MHz \'030, 21Mb RAM SD/FF, 2 floppies, internal CD-ROM drive, micromys v3 w/laser mouse
A1000 Microbotics Starboard II w/2Mb 1080, & external floppy (AIRdrive)
C-128 w/1571, 1750, & Final Cartridge III+

I kinda like Datastore from Digita. Not bland looking and all mouse menu driven. One nice thing is that you can still buy the complete Amiga Magic Pak from AmigaKit that comes with the printed manuals too. http://amigakit.leamancomputing.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=40&products_id=905 Here's a screen shot....

A500: 2MB Chip, 8MB Fast, IndiECS, MiniMegi, IDE4ZorroII on Z-500, KS1.3/KS3.1, WB3.1&BWB

A2000HD: 2MB Chip, 128MB Fast, P5:Blizz 2060@50MHz, PCD-50B/4GBCF, XSurf100, RapidRoad, IndiECS, Matze RTG, MiniMegi, CD-RW, SunRize AD516, WB3.9

A1200: 2MB Chip, 64MB Fast, 4GBCF, GVP Typhoon 030 @40MHz w/FPU, Subway USB, EasyNet Ethernet, Indi AGA MKI, FastATA MK-IV, Internal Slim CD/DVD-RW, WB3.5

All the Final series in now in the hands of Terminills. He will be updating it. Put in your requests for changes in "look" and he can look at it.

Twist 2 was by far the best middle ground for Amiga databases.  I used to program in Superbase 4, which is more capable.  Final Data was less feature rich and not quite as easy to deploy.

Twist 2 is real easy to deploy and create a database from scratch with an automatic GUI, yet it had more complex relational and reporting capabilities.  Uses datatypes very well, so I created an module inventory for fun and snapped off jpg's.  Took 30 minutes and it was fairly sophisticated.

There was an update on Aminet to bring it to the final release.

That DB looks real nice! I'll have to give a try! Thanks Matt! :)

FD3 Is easily the best I tried on the Amiga for non-addresses.  Before buying it, I tried several cover disks, some of the Aminet offerings, Superbase, and a Softwood release before FD3 (Softbase?).

For addresses and people, Ralph Torchia's Spitfire3 is excellent.  It syncs with the older serial Palms.

Unless he has also contacted the original author of Final Calc, I don't think it will be included, as it was owned by the programmer, and not Softwood.

I was a fan of Softwood's products, and bought every version from Final Copy I to Final Copy II and every version and update for Final Writer, including the Windows version, plus Final Data & Final Calc, but never used Final Data for anything.  If I remember correctly, Final Data was very limited as a true database program, when compared to the others that were available on the Amiga, or any other platform.

It may be interesting to see what is done with the source code for Final Writer and Final Data in the future.  The renewed interest in creating updates for, or new versions of many old Amiga software applications is encouraging.
How are you helping the Amiga community? :)

FD, and most everything else mentioned, were simple "flat file" database programs.  By that time, relational database programs were in vogue on other platforms.  I believe Superbase was one of the few (only?) relational databases available on Amiga.  I don't remember any Amiga database offering much in the way of simple data transfer with the big names on the Windows platform.  This is what hurt the most.

Where did the rights to Superbase go after Russ died?

Thank you all. I found a copy of Twist2, so I will give that a try. Actually, FD3 does an OK job, it just looks so flat to me (no pun intended here). As long as I works, I shouldn't gripe. I'll see what Twist 2 has to offer.
As a note - I love Super Base 4 Pro, but the page editor doesn't work in OS 3.5. I understand there was an upgrade that cured this, but I can't find it.
Again, thank you all for your ideas.

Hi there motrucker....  just curious, where did you find an English version of Twist 2? I scoured the webbies for hours but I could only find a Dutch version. I'd like to give that software a try... I know there's a trial version on  Aminet but would be nice to have. Thanks for any pointers! :)

@ Gizmo;   A friend had a real commercial disk version. But when I tried to load it, the disk has several errors. So, that one's out, unless he has a back up.

Right now My A2000 has 3.1OS on it. I may leave that alone for a while, since Super Base 4 pro works (even the page editor!). I have an old, real version of Super Base 4, so I am in good shape.
I also have MFF+ (Microfiche file plus) that even has an Extras disk. I haven't tried this one yet, but from the manual it looks promising.

I had completely forgotten about MUIBase. I have that some where too.

But - for things like a family & friends birthday database, a flat filer like FD 3 is fine. I set one up, and it does what I need. However, Super Base 4 will be used more now than I know it works fine in 3.1.
