« on: December 04, 2014, 11:25:42 PM »
So just got a new cd of OS 3.9 from Vesalia. Do I still also need to download the Boing bags and instal them or are they included in this CD? There is no info suplied with the CD saying anything about that.

Thanks

It's plain OS3.9. Download & Install the Boing Bags: http://os.amigaworld.de/index.php?lang=en&page=12

Also Boing Bags 3 & 4, here:

http://lilliput.amiga-projects.net/bbag4.htm

I'm running a fully patched 3.9 system with BB1-4 on my A2000, and even then I've found a few other things that were missed.  My suggestion is to just search the name of every program installed on Aminet (after doing the BB1-4 updates) to find any additional updates beyond what the Boing Bags install.   The Peter K. icon.library is an especially important one, since it really helps the performance of the computer and is updated about every month.  Have fun! :)

Watch out for these, there are some things in them that seem to cause scsi troubles and some odd problems, i never could pinpoint it,but going back to os3.9 install with just BB1&2 seemed to fix it. I would suggest making a os3.9 backup to some drawer on the HD with just BB1/2 to fall back on in case then installing 3&4 on the main partition.

When I did mine I did a completely fresh install.  Made a 3.9 recovery floppy and booted off that, formatted my hard drive then threw in the OS 3.9 CD and installed it, then BB 1-4, one right after the other, all in a row.  Most of the times I've heard people having problems with 3-4 is when they install them on top of an already running system, with who knows what stuff already installed and configured.  But yeah, I should have included a disclaimer: "your mileage may vary".  ;)

My .02 cents, I think it's worth the risk if you want "the latest and greatest" 3.9 system you can have.  But it never hurts to make backups along the way.  ;)

Which things? BB4 icon.library is 46.4.397 which is the same version as on Aminet.

If you believe there is a compatibility issue with your system, you can lodge a bug report.

One of the things that seem to cause trouble here or there is the updated scsi.device (actually, IDE device) that came with one of the BBs. Unfortunately, Heinz doesn't seem to care anymore, so it's unfortunately pretty hard to update it.

boingbag 3 and 4 are not magic. They really shouldn't cause any problem on a proper system. All they do is to fix the bugs of a few old rom modules installed by boingbag2 setpatch and add a few programs that were used by majority of OS3.9 users.

Things.  You're just going to have to trust me on this, it's been a year since I did it and I didn't exactly keep a list.  ;)

But that's exactly what I did.  I installed 3.9.  I installed BB1, 2, 3, 4.  Then I went on Aminet and typed in the name of every program in WBStartup, libraries, etc., and I found versions of things that were still newer.  ;)

All good points to look out for, thanks!
I will be doing a fresh install on a blank SD card. Any tips on doing a fresh install from CD, Do I have to have a workbench disk handy in order for it to recognize the cd drive?

Im planning to do the install this weekend.

On the 3.9 CD is a tool to make an emergency recovery floppy.  I booted off that and it didn't have any trouble recognizing my CD drive to complete the install (once I changed the HDToolbox tooltype from "scsi.device" to "gvpscsi.device").

FYI, BB3 & 4 are a reasonable attempt to fix the bugs left in BB1 & 2 so in most cases they should provide better reliability and stability.

There may be a few cases where BB3 & 4 may seem less stable than BB1 & 2 but they are probably hardware specific cases which could not be tested by the BB3 & 4 contributors. ;)

Yes, rather than actually lodge a bug report, so that the issue could be properly investigated and fixed, you decided to just spread FUD about the package on public forums instead.
