Installed OS 3.5 & OS 3.9 - No Icons??
« on: November 21, 2014, 01:18:25 PM »
I just installed OS 3.5 and OS 3.9 to fresh partitions on my A3K.  However, mysteriously when I boot to them (using the OS 3.9 as an example, but it's almost exactly the same on the 3.5) the only icons that show when opening the SYS disk are DEVS and WBSTARTUP.  Showing ALL FILES generates placeholder icons as one would expect, and I've also found programs under PREFS whose icons don't show.

There are .info files for all of these so I'm at a loss.

just to be clear, the 3.5 install was to a clean partition following the discs 3.1 install to PRE and POST installs it requires.  The 3.9 install was also to a clean partition.

Which file system did you use to read the CDs? Could it be that some files showed (and thus were copied) in capital letters only instead of mixed case as it should be? I think that icon files need .info written in lower case in order to be recognised as icons. The same also applies to .library and .device files and probably to others, too.

There is a directory on the discs with all the new, colorful icons and if the install did not complete correctly, they are not copied; you can copy the icons over by yourself, although it takes about 20 minutes.

Ran into this before many moons ago. As I remember I just did a reinstall and all was fixed.

Chris

PS: check for locked files.

You mention in another thread that you use CDFileSystem as the  filesystem with your DVD drive, and I think this might be the reason for  your problems. The thing is that CDFileSystem only supports file names  in the 8.3 format, which means that all icons will end with .INF instead  of .info in the names. Was there any error messages upon installing  AmigaOS? Did you create an Emergency Disk and then boot from this before  installing AmigaOS 3.9?

Hmm... seems plausible.  There is no newicon.library in the OS 3.5 install but there is one in the OS 3.9.. and I can see the icons fine from the OS 3.1 boot which also has NewIcons installed.

However, I thought if NewIcons isn't running that the original icon would show and that is not the case...
