Amiga3000 Super Kickstart and 040/060 cards
« on: November 11, 2014, 08:52:10 PM »
I have read that this combination is impossible due to some routines that the Super Kickstart depends on in the 030 MMU, is this correct?

Tonight I decided to start up my old A3000 with Cyberstorm MKII 060, and of course it booted just fine into my old OS3.9-setup.

I opened the box and checked which kickstart that was seated, and it was pure 3.1 ROMS.

Well.. the fun things about the A3000 is indeed the built-in scandoubler and the Super Kickstart rom.
Is there really no way to get this combination to work at all?

Would have been awesome to boot into Kickstart 3.1 (softkicked) and 1.3 as an alternative.

I believe the Cyberstorm MKII has MAPROM which supports BlizKick.

You can't use the SuperKickstart anymore so you would have to make your own kickstarts with tools like Remus and ROMsplit.

As a bonus, you should be able to get rid of the AmigaOS 3.9 double reboot if you can get everything working.

Thanks for your answer :)
The sad thing about kicking with blizkick is that I don't get any support for the internal SCSI interface in kickstart 1.3 on the a3000 afaik....?

That's a good question. I don't know if it's possible but there is a good chance it is not. If you have a CSMK2 SCSI, it may work as the driver would be in the flash of the accelerator. The AmigaOS finds and uses the 3000 SCSI hardware but it didn't exist when AmigaOS 1.3 was made. If you were a hardware guru, maybe you could ROM split AmigaOS 1.4 (hidden secret that could be selected by clicking at the very top left hand corner of some early 3000 SuperKickstart ROM screen). It was pretty buggy as I recall though.

Quote from: wiki
Kickstart/Workbench 1.4 was a beta version of the upcoming 2.0 update and never released, but the Kickstart part was shipped in very small quantities with early Amiga 3000 computers, where it is often referred to as the "Superkickstart ROM". In these machines it is only used to bootstrap the machine and load the Kickstart that will be used to actually boot the system. The appearance of a very early first release of 1.4 was similar to 1.3, but with colors slightly changed. A second version was similar to that of 2.0 and higher, with just minor differences. It is, however, possible to dump out of the OS selection screen by clicking where one would expect to see a close gadget. This will cause the machine to boot Kickstart 1.4 using either the wb_2.x: partition, or from a floppy.
