What Exactly is Dopus?

Hi all, I have seen the thread for the new Dopus release but I have never used Dopus before what exactly is and what does it do?

It started out as a directory manager and slowly morphed into an operating system.
If you can get one of the early versions you might like it as a directory manager.
DOpus now can take over most of Workbench functions.

You mean a desktop replacement. Dopus isn't even remotely what you'd call an operating system. Desktop != operating system.

I got Dopus along with a workbench pack. I think I used it a few times to unzip stuff but apart from that I couldn't really work out how to use it. It would be nice if someone did a tutorial on how to use it properly.

No, it's not. It's a file manager that can be used as a Workbench replacement. It doesn't wrap anything, and you don't have to use it that way. I've got mine set up to work like Dopus 4.

Yeah, its provably more similar to windows "Explorer" (not internet explorer) with a lot more functionality - comparable to Xtree-Gold under DOS or Midnight Commander under Unix functionality wise.

More of a GUI tool that helps you manage and view your files.

And here I thought I was the only person still using Disk Master. I use the %&$#?@!%&$#?@!%&$#?@!%&$#?@! out of DOpus on my Wintel boxes. I bought three licenses for each of my machines. I would be lost without it.

I always preferred DirWork, by Chris Hames.  Got it back when it was free waaay back in the day, used it through all the free versions, then when it went commercial I got lucky enough to find it on a coverdisk (I was a very, very poor Amiga user back in the day, couldn't afford Dopus).

They all do pretty much the same things: allow you faster access to copy files, move files, rename, sort, unarchive, view pictures, and run many, many other tasks.  They can be a bit complex to initially configure, but once done it's one of those "couldn't live without it" tools.  I set my DirWork to run by pressing the * key on the numeric keypad right in my startup, so it's always available (starts in sleep mode).

If you go to Google and do an image search for "DirWork Amiga" or "Dopus Amiga" you should find dozens and dozens of screenshots of different people's configurations, which, just like Amiga's, everyone's is unique.

I love the original DM.. I can run it half-height..and it just looks good.

Dopus is extra. And also great. At least Dopus 4.x. I've tried Dopus 5.x but never managed to be comfortable with it. Personally, Dopus 4.1 is the one tool I couldn't live without on my Amiga 2000. As for Windows, I use Total Commander.

Thanks everyone sounds like a great program so will download and give it a try, are you able to customize the workbench using dopus?
