Sam460CR + OS4.1 Final Edition question!
« on: October 27, 2014, 05:07:15 PM »
I am waiting to purchase a Sam460CR, which my wild guess, is that it will come bundled with the OS4.1 Final Edition disc. I will be building my own system (probably) with a 5450 video card.

Now the problem lies with the fact that the Sam460CR does not have any on-board videocard. So, assuming that the latest A-EON Radeon drivers are not included on the CD, how would one go around installing Amiga OS4.1 AND getting a video output from the 5450 video card?

Hmmm... a paradoxical conundrum if ever I saw one!

Probably means that this won't work either... just great. LOL

Maybe, after registering AOS4.1FE with Hyperion, you'll be able to download (for free?) what drivers you need for you H/W config from AmiStore or something... Just a guess.

When the answer is only a humorous one... things aren't good.

I said this at the bottom... probably missed it... only a guess though... I'm sure they'll think of something though... there's no way they would not think of something... :)

How do you do that? You need graphics drivers to be able to do a darn thing =)

Good question... Maybe there's a generic video driver that would give you a display during install (sorta like when you install Windows) and then later you could download your specific video driver for your card. Sorry, I'm not helping really... I know that Matt said he wouldn't be back in the UK till Wednesday so might have to wait till then. :(

Hello

The RadeonHD 1.2 is a free upgrade for customers who have bought v1 from us.

It is not included in the Final Edition. We recently commissioned a new Lite Edition of the RadeonHD driver.

We  are working with ACube/Hyperion currently to enable a Lite Edition of  the RadeonHD for emergency boot purposes of the AmigaOS CD.

Nothing "murky" here- sorry- cannot understand your comment.

@everblue

Forgot to add that RadeonHD supports selected 5000, 6000, 7000 and R5, R7, R9 cards: see Amiwest Press Release for more detail:

OS4.1 comes with the Radeon HD driver; even if it was an old release, the update is free.  So be good for goodness sake, and enjoy!

You appear not to understand what the issue is so you downplay it.

Amigakit have answered what is being done to address the issue.
A special version of the driver so people who buy a new Sam460cr with AmigaOS 4.1 FE  can boot up their new purchase without having to have a Radeon HD 4000 series card. Once they get it booted they can install the paid 1.2 version of the driver if they have purchased it. without this you
you would find it difficult to boot to install the 1.2 driver .
so be nice when people raise relevant issues.
It is being addressed by A-eon,Acube and Hyperion  because it IS an issue,

You are correct if I now understand that you want to upgrade video cards from the standard, as even OS4.1 Classic supports the AGA chipset.

The issue that he and Everblue were worried about, is that the old version of the RadeonHD driver on the original AmigaOS 4.1 CD doesn't support Radeon HD 5xxx+ cards. This is a big deal, because if your card isn't supported, then you cannot install the OS; your install CD won't boot.

Radeon HD 4xxx cards are no longer made, so more and more people have Radeon HD 5xxx+ cards. It would be unacceptable to expect users to find and plug in an old graphics card, just to install the OS.

Hence, Amigakit asked me to create a lite version of the driver especially for the new install CD. This allows the CD to boot, so that you can install the OS (and your licensed full copy of the RadeonHD driver, whether that's version 1.x or 2.x). Problem solved.

Thank you for 're-clarifying that issue again.  Since the CDs are not copy protected, one could just build a CD with the correct versions of whatever driver they wanted, at least this is what I did to install Ubuntu with the install guide, updated kernels and such; or is this in need of someone else doing it for you?  I don't know, I forget...

Yes, one could build a custom CD (assuming that you already have a working system, or a second machine). However, I think that most people will appreciate it that the CD just works; no extra steps necessary.
