Deneb USB Audio performance?
« on: October 14, 2014, 02:07:06 PM »
With the release of USB for the X-Surf100; I was curious what others experienced with using their Deneb with USB Audio.

How well did it play MP3?

What was the cpu load like?

It USB Audio a good method of playing music on the Amiga?

Are there audio drivers for usb cards on the miggy.  Fairly sure not , though usually proved wrong on these things.  I cant imagine the bandwidth would be there anyway

I have a cheap USB audio stick for my A4000 CSPPC / Deneb. It does take up quite some CPU cycles but I've not done proper measurements.

I imagine the performance is adequate, but not good. It won't be doing the MP3 decoding, so that's still up to the CPU. Plus there's probably some additional overhead cost to get the processing from USB to AHI and vice versa.

It's fine on my Cyberstorm MKIII.  It will play 128kbps at 44kHz in AHI with a little hiccup every now and then when the SCSI gets busy.  Higher bit-rates get marginal to down-right unusable at any sample rate.

So I was wrong about the drivers :) but about as unusable as playing mp3s in general without dedicated hardware on the miggy ?

I play them just fine using a csppc with mediator and sound card. no dedicated audio processing hardware(i mean the sound card does not unload the cpu to play).

I play MP3's just fine through my AD516 with the AHI driver. Then again I don't think that driver makes use of any of the 516's advanced hardware, and is just relying on the '040 for decompression. And that is just a damned shame. Be nice if there were more support for original Amiga equipment, and not having to rely on USB, etc. :(

This would require a dedicated decoder driver/plugin, similar to MASPlayer, and players must have dedicated support for such plugins. Then Amiga replayers are discontinued what makes getting any support even more difficult...

If the CPU decoding was fast enough you would not even have to consider using such things...

When we say we play mp3 just fine I am surprised.  I take it we are not talking 320 at 44 in stereo whilst doing anything else ?

Yea,we are talking that. the mp3 playing is offloaded to the 604e/233 for playing while the 060 under os3.9 takes care of everything as normal. multitasking is no problem. i also run workbench in 1920x1200x32 and its quite fast with the radeon. note this is for a csppc and A4000, not necessarily the blizzard ppc which is way slower/bottlenecked.
With the zoram and 256MB extra +128Mb on csppc  i never run out of ram either. Flac, ogg etc also work.

All this has worked fine since mediator was introduced and you could use a sb128 or other sound card(with csppc accelerator of course). Zorro3 usb is quite fast with the deneb also.

and before this circa 1995 was the A4000 with 040/40 warp engine and Picasso IV with Concertio sound card addon for it.24 bit gfx and nice sound.

Another easy way to play mp3 on amiga with nearly zero load could also be the masplayer.

where have you been man? :pint:

Last time i tried was on my 030/50 and was terrible.

Never tried on my ppc 175/040 because had much more capable hardware and software for playing mp3 i guess

My USB audio dongle (Turtle Beach, Amigo) also works fine with Deneb and CSPPC in OS3.9 and 4.1; it uses some CPU cycles, but not terribly noticeable.  One needs a secondary file (usbaudio.a.main) to have it work in OS4.1, though.
