Deneb setup

Hi,

this question is an offshoot of my A3000 SCSI issue. I thought if I'd be able to boot from something connected to the Deneb, I'd have an easier time working on the hard drive.

The Deneb works basically fine, and I can read both Amiga and PC formatted memory sticks. However, I always need to go into Trident and click "Restart" after a reboot before the devices are recognised. I used the "Quick setup" option in Luciferin to install what I hoped would be everything necessary to run Poseidon directly from the Deneb. Since I've got an A3640 installed, I also tried adding the NoCache module found on a1k.org. I've also tried both the DMA and PIO version of the driver. I also added a couple of seconds of boot delay to the USB stick.

What is it exactly that I need to do to be able to boot from a USB device? Nothing connected to the USB is visible in the early startup menu at the moment (which would make sense, as they are not visible even after Workbench has loaded).

The answer to your second question is in the forums, as I've read, but not used it; as to the Deneb normally starting up in the boot sequence, there are two options: >Trident NOGUI QUIET is the obscure one and >PSDstackloader is the second one normally installed by Poseidon.

Someone more familiar with the booting USB devices issue will be along shortly.:-)

It's actually not that it doesn't start - when I go into Trident the Deneb is "online" - but no devices are listed. Only after I click restart it notices that there is a memory stick connected. I've got one formatted with Amiga partitions and another one with FAT which I use to transfer stuff from the PC, but neither appears directly after boot.

 - You have to put Poseidon in the flashrom of the deneb.
There is a menu option in Luciferin to do this. It adds all poseidon files to the upload list.

- Next partition and format the USB stick like you would do with a normal harddrive. The device for usb massstorage devices is usbscsi.device.

- Install your system files to the USB stick. after that you can boot from the USB stick.


If your system doesn't boot and your usb stick can't be found in the boot menu, try to increase the startup-delay value of your usb stick in trident prefs.
edit: don't forget to reflash the deneb rom if you changed the startup-delay, or else there will be an old version of psdstackloader in the flashrom

You can´t see USB Devices in the early-startup, because holding the left mousebutton will deactivate the DENEB!

The USB Stick, from where you want to boot, must have the highest priority of the boot-devices at all!

Aha! That would make some sense. But how about the devices not appearing before clicking "Restart" in Trident? Even if I haven't gone through the early startup menu?

First possibility:
If you flashed your DENEB with Luciferin using the the standart settings for Poseidon, there is no need to start it again in the user-startup

second possiblity:
you have a "broken-Firmware-ROM" issue! You can try to reflash the DENEB-Firmware by using the latest Version http://www.e3b.de/usb/firm/DENEB_V11.lzh

Wich jumpers are set on the DENEB? Normaly there ar NO jumpers to set in a Z3 Amiga than it ran in the DMA-Mode Z3 what other cards do you use in your setup ? Maybe it is a DMA-problem ? you can also try to set the DENEB in PIO-Mode and put it in Z2 Mode by using the Jumpers (just for testing)

Yep, I have reflashed to v11 a few days ago.

No jumpers are installed. I have tried both Z3 DMA and PIO, both work fine otherwise except the stack just doesn't start. Have not tried Z2 mode.

The Deneb doesn't generate any kind of log which would indicate what has happened during the boot process?

No Jumpers is the normal setup! Please try Z2 Mode! (just for testing) What other cards are installed in your System ?

I had the Zorro3 Problem when using WB 3.1 ! in 3.9 all is great. 3.1 only works with Z2 Mode for me.

Is the mouse and keyboard working for example in a Game like Ports of Call ? could you try with booting from a gamedisk ?

The lucas-arts adventures works fine with DENEB Mouse and Keyboard for example.

This is just to ensure your hardware is working with your luciferin setup.

I will give the Z2 mode a try. The only other card I have in there is a ZorRAM. I can take that out too for a test.

Again, everything works absolutely fine after booting up, the thing just does not start properly automatically. I have found some threads saying that the A3640 might cause this, but nothing very clear about a solution.

3.9 is an option but I would first need to get the hard drive situation sorted (see my other recent thread here).

I am not using a USB keyboard or mouse, just the memory sticks. A network adapter might be useful in the future.

My memory could be wrong,but i thought the usb stick had to be formatted amiga bootable, I dont think Fat will work?

Yes, the drive in question is partitioned in HDToolBox and formatted in Workbench.
