Beware non-payer on ebay
« on: February 16, 2004, 06:51:08 PM »
So, one of my lots ended on Ebay UK today. I was selling a Catweasel Mk 2 on ebay. It eventually went for 22 pounds to a bidder whose ID is robertsmythe.

All well and good you may think. No. I got home later to find the following email.

"Sorry, this is too expensive, I am not giong to pay for it.  How about 」10?
That is a much fairer price, I think.

Bob"

Just a warning for any other people selling stuff on Ebay. He currently has a -2 rating (soon to be even worse). I did try and message him about it but the mails got bounced. Likewise trying to reply to the above one, that got bounced.

Please report the git to the EBay authorities, they'll make sure the account gets deleted.

I will do, but there's something in the Ebay rules that you have to give them 7 days after the auction has ended before you report them.

But this guy has stated that he is not paying, so I thought I'd warn others and strike while the iron is hot.

I would suggest just letting it go, as he can always turn back and leave some nasty feedback for spite. Simply relist the auction.

A guy gave me bad feedback on Ebay and he was the non-payer,
I filed an Ebay fraud report and wrote to Ebay but
they still never removed the one negative in my perfect
Ebay record. :( That sucks, now I wish neither of us
had left any feedback. Relisting might be a better idea.

That 7 day timeout thingy isn't applicable when someone obviously isn't going to pay and/or has given false name/address/phone number information. I had this recently: some hotmail-zero-rating-git won a laptop I put up but never replied to emails. So I requested contact information which came up with a phone number. I rang it and some poor old granny answered; 'Huh? Interweb? Wuzzat?'.

Anyhow, I reported this to EBay and they deleted the guy's account within two days. Like that's gonna help; prolly has opened 10 new other EBay accounts with other Hotmail addresses. :madashell:

"robertsmythe" has now been added to my blocked-bidders list, cheers for the warning! There's no excuse for that kind of behaviour on eBay. Maybe we should start an Amiga.org blacklist of unreliable e-bay buyers & sellers?

Only problem with having him removed from eBay is that he will come back later with a new handle unless you are going to keep his address so you don't deal with him again, but then its to late because to find out his address is to deal with him.  Catch 22 no matter what you do.   :-o

Is there any exceptional circumstances were you could get your negative removed?
I wouldn't waste any time complaining, as I was once threatened and called a racist just because my username was a reference to a German Mk2 Tiger Tank of which I worked on down Bovington Tank Museum. This complete scrote came up with some unbelievable threats as to what he was going to do to me.
I reported this to Ebay and about a week later they told me to get in touch with my local law enforcement officer. There's some reet wierdo's out there......
Next time you put on a sale, state Boldly that you want no time wasters and last minute retractions or something like that....

AFAIK you have 90 days to leave feedback. If you're ever in a stale-mate situation where you don't want to risk a retaliatory neg then why dont you do this...

Set a reminder for 89.5 days and then leave a neg >:) The chances are that, by the time the other party has logged on, they will not have time to leave a neg for you.

I've been meaning to do this for a number of NPBs that i've encountered but always forget. It *should* work though. You might also want to try and leave a smaller amount of time just to make it even harder for them to retaliate.
