Software incompatible with 68010
« on: July 23, 2014, 10:55:29 AM »
I read that putting in a 68010 was not worth the effort because not all programs were compatible.
So which programs were not compatible?

Back in the days when I still used my A500 I also ran it with an 68010. AFAIR all I noticed was a slight acceleration - I cannot remember ever having encountered an incompatible program.

But I used the A500 mainly for serious tasks - I was never focussed on games. Maybe there were incompatible games - IDK.
All my productivity software (Office, CAD, CNC) ran fine.
All the best,

The other way around, if you have a 68010 you can use quit key to get back to OS, it's the bog standard 68000 that can't quit to OS.

Also if using WHDLoad a 68010 is worth it if you got the chip/fast mem needed :)

Compatibility side, I have not experienced any issues to be honest, there are probably some but nothing that have bothered me :)

There shouldn't be much. The only thing the 68000 does the 68010 cannot do is a MOVE SR,dx in user mode. For the 68010 and on, this is a supervisor only instruction, replaced by MOVE CCR,dx which is not supported by the 68K. If a program really needs that - which was rarely ever the case - there is an operating system function for that.

The biggest problem was protection systems on games - games like Populous just crash when starting to load on a 68010. If you use WHDLoad, of course, that's not an issue, but for original disks you're better off with a 68000.

I think it depends on the KS Rom version how many incompatible programs you will run into, original disks or not. KS 1.2 has issies if I remember. KS 1.3 and should work.

I ran 68010's for years and never encountered any compatibility issues, FWIW.  It's great being able to use the 'quit' key in WHDLoad games!

As others have said the 68010 enables the quit key. As for compatibilities issues I never had any but I mainly used WHDLoad.

The 68010 were also a tiny bit faster, but nothing worth noting. Was one of my best/cheap upgrades I ever did back in the day.

Pretty cheap now too, a lot on Ebay.

The copy protected games that don't work are usually using Rob Northern protection...the protection scheme does horrible things with stack frames or something, I did know at one point but I've forgotten now. Doesn't matter which kickstart version you had, though.
