Possible damaged monitor
« on: July 12, 2014, 01:48:42 AM »
Hi again. I recieved my Amiga 500 today, but when I opened it, I discovered part of the case broke, and I'm assuming it was from shipping. Anyway, it turns on, and I'm assuming it works because the power light turns on, and when I put in the kickstart, the floppy light flashes for a little bit.

The issue I'm having is with the monitor. The monitor doesn't seem to have any external damage at all, maybe a tiny bump on the top, but the problem is the display it self. The monitor turns on, but I don't see a power led or picture. The guy I purchased the monitor from, on eBay, noted that you had to hit the power button several times to turn it on or off, but I'm not getting anything. I hear it turn on, but I see no picture or power led.

What should I do to get the monitor to work, or is it broken?

The monitor caps might be bad. And a few other factors. You should turn off the monitor for at least a week. Then open it up but be very careful opening it up.  Or have someone else look at it.

I found out something interesting. When I have both the Amiga and the monitor turned on, I see a faint red light from the monitor power led.

Edit: I went onto AmigaKit and bought a Amiga RGB to SVGA/*multiscan video adapter (will try to use another CRT monitor). Hopefully, it should work, if not, I'll return both the A500 and Monitor.

Yeah the led is red when it on from what I researched.  That is sign that works but if it not showing a picture than it bigger issue. Caps and few other electronic things.

Once I get the VGA cable, could I connect to a LCD monitor (for quick testing), or will it only work on SVGA CRT monitors?

That adapter won't work unless your Amiga 500 has the ECS chipset.
Even then you will need to set your Amiga during boot to go into one of these display modes:

DBLPal
DBLNTSC
Euro 36Hz and 72Hz
Multiscan/Productivity
Super72
VGA Only

...and those modes won't work with most games.

There's a small possibility that this adapter will allow you to use regular NTSC/PAL modes *if* your VGA TV/Monitor can support 15KHz video modes (most cannot).  I know the Amigakit website says most CRT monitors can support 15KHz, but I have found the opposite to be true.

I think the AmigaKit website is confused. Only a few CRT monitors can do 15KHz. It does correctly mention the screenmode that are supported though (all of which are 30KHz).

To re-iterate, though, this adapter is NOT a scandoubler and games will not work unless they run in workbench and you have an ECS Amiga.

I would recommend using a bog standard Amiga RGB cable and attaching it to an LCD telly, most of which act as a scandoubler internally.

Seems to me I had an Apollo ff dongle I would plug into my A2000 video out that would let me use a 19" CRT. Would not work without it.

I made a claim against UPS and bought another monitor. Hopefully, it should work. Could it be the cable it self?

Not likely to find a 15Khz capable monitor in the the US, you need this: http://amigakit.leamancomputing.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=82&products_id=918 .

I agree that the Indivision ECS is the way to go, but you could also check this thread and try and find one of the monitors mentioned:

I bought a working 1084 monitor, so I should be fine, unless something bad happens during the shipping process, again.
