Support for professional audio cards in OS4?
« on: December 25, 2002, 03:46:49 PM »
Just wondering how hard it would be to get the drivers from one/all of the following pro sound card manufacturers ( Digital Audio Labs,  Echo, Hoontech,  Midiman, ST Audio, Lynx Studios or/and  Terratech)?
Please feel free point out if I have missed a manufacturer,( I've intentionally left Creative Labs out).

Even though OS4.0 is not out yet I figured that thinking about thease things now would be an good idea as I asume that OS4.0 won't have support for these cards once it out anyway, and the Amiga is supposed to be a multimedia computer. What ever that  means.

My guess is that the Midi Man (the Lynx cards are the best preformance wise though) products would propably be the easiest to port given the fact that they seem most willing to share information, they are the only ones that I could find Linux drivers for?
And before someone asks yes my programming skills are limited, and thus I don't know how hard it would be to port the drivers.

And last but not least, would porting these drivers be realistic, at all???

Oh yes! I want it, I want it!!  :-D
And I'll just add a few:
ESI-Pro (Ego-sys), M-Audio (same company as Midiman?) and RME

Well, I'm no coder myself, but from what I got out of some people who are, the AHI system doesn't support high res, high rate (only 16bit/48kHz IIRC) in it's current state. So either AHI has to be improved; a new standard introduced or each card would use its own system in drivers (and software would have to support multiple standards (on a card to card basis)).

If I'm totally off the mark here, please correct me.

It'd be nice... I'd love to use my new A1 with a Hammerfal card and a MOTU interface to record with.  Also, it'd be ANOTHER reason to NEVER HAVE TO BOOT WINDOWS AGAIN.   :-D

nuff said.
Have you hugged your KennyR or Paul Gadd today?

I have a midiman Delta 44 here that I would
LOVE to run without windows.

As far as never booting windows again I'd have
to wait until DIRECWAY was ported. And since they
cant even support MAC or LINUX I'm sure I'd be in for
a LOOOONG wait.

Like I said b4 - I would *love* to write drivers for audio cards, scsi cards (of which I already have started for adaptec models) but lack of amigaONE (due to lack of $$) means no drivers.
