How do I Install my 16GB CF Card?
« on: May 10, 2014, 05:19:01 PM »
Hi,

I'm looking for advice on how to partition and format my 16GB CF Card on my Amiga 1200.

I've physically installed it and I have managed to view the drive using HDTool on the WB3.1 install disk.

I have installed ClassicWB on a 4GB CF drive previously, but wanted more space.

I know it can be done and have scoured the internet looking for a tutorial but I can find nothing.

I have found that the WB partition should be less than 4GB, someone recommended 500MB. I'm hoping then to have just 1 more partition with the rest of the space allocated to it.

I really don't know where to begin with this so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Rob.

Please can you help if you know how to do this?

I'm really struggling here. :'(

My bro bought me the card for Xmas and I never got round to fitting it yet until now and it's proving to be a complete and utter nightmare.

Hi, you can follow my guide here:

It's exactly the same process for a 16gb CF as it is for the 40gb HDD prepared on the tutorial.

Thanks very much. I looked on youtube but my search criteria didn't pick this up. It's all very time consuming stuff messing about with amigas so I think I will come back to this tomorrow.

I'll report back once I'm done. I've previously had trouble getting my pc with winuae and windows 8.1 to recognise the card in winuae even when I've cleared it with diskpart. But will try again tomorrow.

Actually, the max partition size on a standard non-patched Amiga is 2GB, and all partitions must be within the first 4GB of the harddisk. That being said, a 500MB Workbench partition should be enough.

In order to use the full capacity of your CF card, you will need the following:

1. A filesystem which supports large harddisks, this can be either PFS, SFS or a newer FFS.
2. A newer version of scsi.device that patches the system on bootup by using LoadModule.
3. NSDPatch for helping the Workbench to "see" all partitions beyond the 4GB border.

If you plan on installing ClassicWB to the harddisk, all required files will be included. But you must manually copy a correct version of scsi.device from the MyFiles/LargeHD drawer.

You can follow the instructions in fitzsteve's video if you want to setup your CF card by using WinUAE, but if you prefer to do this on your A1200 instead, you can try one of my ready-made Amiga911 boot disks, this one should be suitable for you:  https://app.box.com/s/s4d1tgoihush5gjnsghg
The disk contains almost everything needed for setting up a large harddisk on the Amiga, the only thing you need to add is a suitable version of the scsi.device file. You can find it in the LargeHD pack that I grabbed from ClassicWB: https://app.box.com/s/kiu7zx4gdzyht1so5udz

For setting up your CF card, I will recommend that you use HDInstTools instead of the AmigaOS 3.1 version of of HDToolBox, this is because it's such a pain trying to resize partitions of a large drive with the latter. The AmigaOS 3.9 HDToolBox is of course the best one though.

If you are interested in the Amiga911 disk, you can read more about it here: http://amiga911maker.site11.com

I recommend PFS. It's what I use for my 8GB CF. Had a terrible time figuring out how to set it up, googled and researched for days, finally a post on this forum by Paul1981 gave me the last pieces of the puzzle I needed to get it working. I think if you search the forums enough you should find be able to find a few posts by him, and by me, as I struggled through it.

Also keep your Workbench partition under 500MB and as the first partition on the disk for best compatibility with older software. I've found some utilities give corruption errors when copying to extended partitions (beyond what the Amiga could normally recognize back in the day), but Workbench 3.9 doesn't seem to have any trouble copying to those partitions, and I assume a more modern utility (like the just released update to Directory Opus) shouldn't have any trouble, either.

Good luck!
