Output of flyer (lightwave) to Betacam SP
« on: April 05, 2014, 04:13:46 AM »
Can anyone please tell me how do you sync the output of the flyer (output lightwave animation) to a betacam sp recorder?

 Thanks!

You may know more about this than me...but don't you either need:

- a time base corrector if you are dumping it live (i.e. real time dubbing)
- or a frame-accurate single frame recording external video tape recorder with serial connection to the Amiga to do frame-by-frame recording to tape?  The serial connection allows the Amiga to control the VTR and advance frames on the tape.
Music I've made using Amigas and other retro-instruments: http://theovoids.bandcamp.com

My understanding was that you could just record straight to the tape - that TBCs were only needed for input, and that single-frame recorders were from the pre-Flyer days when mass storage of high quantities of video was not possible. Assuming I'm not wrong, try:

Make sure the Toaster's program out goes to the recorder's program in. Drop the anim into a new Toaster project file along with any other relevant croutons. Hit record on tape, hit play on Toaster, and that should do it.

Is it giving you an error, or just not working?

I suggest you use Rend24 (Aminet), which lets you record each frame of a lightwave animation, and lets you compose an anim for later playback, so that you get smooth, non stuttering playback.

I have used that setup about 15 years ago, and it worked.

BTW, I suggest you get rid of the flyer, it is a buggy piece of hardware that never performed too well (unlike its analog cousing, the Video Toaster). Even its own video compression VTASC is flawed, it has a sort of wavelet algorithm, and is lossy (you wont see pixelation but instead you will have signal noise). Add to that the fact it only works in NTSC, and that it demands lots of space and scsi harddrives.
If you still want NLE on the Amiga I suggest you either use the Vlab Motion/Toccata combo, or the high end Broadcaster Elite.

That was my understanding too!

Matt_H, I think I remember you once saying ( over a year ago) that it is possible to use the Video Toaster without TBC's as long as the input sources are digital such as a DVD player. Am I correct? It would make sense anyway.

I am making progress.  I connected my blackburst to my Betacam SP and my Sony camcorder Svideo out to the Betacam SP and perfect video. So now I will loop the TBC out of the Betacam SP to input 1 of the toaster and then connect the Svideo out of the betacam SP to input 3 of the YCP-100. You have to use input 3 as 1 and 2 are used by the flyer/toaster.
