Shark PPC
« on: February 13, 2004, 11:05:24 AM »
Hi all,

I've been looking around the net but I'm having trouble finding info on the Shark PPC card from Elbox.  So I've got a couple of questions I hope someone can answer.

1/ Is the card be compatible with existiing 3.* OSs if WarpUp etc. is used?

2/ Is the card actually available to buy?

Cheers,

Lee

No. Elbox haven't released it and claim they won't until OS4 is out, and even then there is some doubt if OS4 will actually run on it.

Whoops.... why didn't I think of that?

So, anyway, the only I can get PPC under 3.* is the use the incresingly rare Phase 5/DCE cards?

But will OS4 be actually so much better than an improved OS 3.9 but then with only PPC support ???

Better? .. IMHO not so much in 4.0 .. Perhaps later (4.1 etc) when they have time to implement some major changes, like re-writing entire workbenck to support 16/24bit screenmodes properly.

But, even though it would not be much different than Os3.9 + number of hacks & patches it's native mode is definitely going to be incompatible.. Ok, you can run well behaving 3.X programs on 4.0 BUT there is no way on running 4.x native softwares on older systems. It's not a biggie now, but someday (if OS4 becomes popular) there will be a lot of new/impover programs that won't work on older machines (including Amitlon etc)..

anyway os4 is nice enough on powerup , FAR better than os3.x anyway ..

anyway put it like this, there will one day be 2 alternatives for powerup , 1 is MOS and the second is Aos4 , none of em is available to buy or to download at this point so its fiction until then.

Looks like I'll have to find a PPC card then.
Another question...  is it actually worth it?  I haven't been up with Amiga developments for the past 2 years and I don't actually know how much software actually supports then a1200 cards.

I mean, would it be more worth getting a 68060 instead?  I've got a Apollo 1240 @ 40MHz already so would I see a benifit?

Cheers.

Depends.. If you are going to stick on 68k code and old apps alone, then 060 is definitely faster and also runs cooler than 040.

But: Neither Morphos nor AmigaOS 4 work on 68k CPU so having 68060 won't do much good with them. Besides, according what I have heard, at least on Morphos (shoudl happen on os4 too when it's finished) it's faster to run 68k programs on PPC turbo than 68060 cpu...
