RS232 Wifi
« on: March 04, 2014, 11:28:55 AM »
After the alternate gotek drive emulator firmware allowed it to be used on an Amiga, I wondered if a similar thing could be done for cheap internet access.

The firmware in this would probably not be very useful.

However it appears to be running Linux

In which case it might be possible to reconfigure/reflash it to provide a PPP connection. You can configure the wireless using AT commands, so that would need a dedicated Amiga application but the actual internet connections should be doable using MiamiDX (or any other TCP/IP stack that supported PPP).

Running it over RS232 (especially paula) would obviously be slower than using PCMCIA/Zorro/PCI etc. But the last time I had an Amiga online it was using a modem, so I'm not particularly worried. Plus it would be reusable on any classic computer, Atari ST, c64 (just add serial port) etc.

I'm not going to look into this any further for a while, so if someone else fancies a challenge then it could be a cheap hack.
