Cyberstorm MK1 not booting in ONE of my A4000s

Hi everyone!

Recently I decided to get a few of my Amigas up and running again, and one of them appeared not to be able to boot with my Cyberstorm MK1 060.

So I started searching for the problem, and replaced the Cyberstorm with a Commodore A3200/A3400 68030 board.
Same problem, black screen, no kickstart picture or whatever.

I then removed all the SIMMs from the motherboard and reseated them. Now the board boots just fine with the 030-board.

Oh well, so I thought that the problem had to be just those old SIMMs on the mb, and replaced the 030 with the 060 board again.
But nothing happens when the Cyberstorm is installed on this motherbord. I can see those flickerings colors you get every time you reset the machine. (that red stripe effect from the 060 board), but it won't continue to boot or give me the kickstartscreen. I can reset the machine with Ctrl + A + A, and it gives me those "cpu-colors" again like a normal reboot, but stops there.

I then removed the Cyberstorm again and installed it in a spare A4000. Woala, everything is normal. That board boots just fine with the Cyberstorm installed. Confirmed the recognition of the board with ShowConfig, and even the RAM-module is detected ok.

I have tried the failing mb with J100 in both EXT and INT-position with no luck.
Are there any other jumpers on this board that can cause the Cyberstorm not to work?

As you can see on the attached picture, there are some corrosion around the batteryarea, probably from an earlier failing battery. Could this be causing the Cyberstorm to fail? And if it does, why will the machine still boot with the 030-board?

Looks like you've got a bit of battery leakage - the fuzzy blue/green stuff on the surrounding chips - so get that cleaned up, pronto! I once had a 4000 that was having trouble booting until I cleaned up that stuff. But get it cleaned up regardless - if it hasn't damaged anything yet, it will if you leave it there.

Also take a look at J104. See here for jumper settings.

Tried to clean up a bit tonight with IPA, but some places there are still residues of some sort on some pins.... (they are not as shiny as they are on the opposite side of the chips).

Both jumpers J100 and J104 were tried in both INT and EXT positions without luck....

The best thing you can do is get the battery off the board and relocate it. Did this on my A2000 and relocated on a small board behind the front LED's. Next clean real well and maybe even re-flow the solder, if your confident with an iron, do so.

Hopefully that chip isn't damaged

Hmmm that's a good tip, Quiksanz. I'll consider to do that so I can sleep well at night not dreaming about leaky batteries on 20 years old motherboards

The main problem itself may be caused by bad capacitors somewhere on the motherboard after a discussion over at eab.abime.net. Think the guy is probably right, and it's worth a try recapping the board. Everything else seems to work just fine when using a 030 CPU.

I'm considering doing the recap-job myself, but I probably have to get myself a new iron and practice some more removing capacitors on old crappy "soul"-less PC-boards :juggler:

Does AmigaKit do recapping? There are a few people here on the board who've done it for others as well. I've got a 4000 board of my own that needs that procedure...

They list it as a service on their website. Reasonable price, too, IMHO.
