Sux, I hate when things break when you trying to make things better.

BTW, I'm using 4GB microdrive, a small HD inside CF card. Works very well.

I would try smaller HD, if you have one.

Tried a 4.3gig 3.5inch ide drive. partioned and formatted fine. Simply copied all the files from a workbench disc onto the drive, and it booted up quickly with no issues. So the ide controller is fine. I've ordered some new compact flash adapters.

You have it set like this.

CD drive-------MB-------CF

Might try this way.

MB------CF------CD drive

I know that back in the day connecting the Mb to the middle of the cable caused all kind of problems for PC clones

Just my opinion.

Its a definite possibility that the order matters... but I can't find any hard evidence to suggest that it actually does...

Right now, it won't even boot from the compact flash with no cd rom connected... :P

Great job. Back around '02 / '03 I put an A1200 in an A500 case and used the extra space to put in a slim DC drive in place of the floppy, Midi adapter, accelerator, scandoubler etc. Don't have it any more (sold it to someone in Australia in '04, postage was £80!) but must have photos on an old CDR somewhere.

The issue may be clarified with better ATAPI support using the ELBOX buffered interface and IDEFix97 software; these have made easy work for me accessing CD/DVD drives on a 1200.

Its all very... red! nice :p

I've currently got this dvd rom drive working...

However, I'm not using the CF card (really just a test)

40gig 2.5inch IDE drive, two 4gig partitions.

Drive formatted through Winuae, Classic Workbench copied through Winuae.

Hard drive set as slave, dvd drive set as master, using the same cable I  was using on the CF card (yes, both drives are being powered by the ide  header )

Now, I've just installed IDEFix97, which at first wouldn't find the dvd drive, but did the second time I ran it..

CD rom drive worked...

However, IDEFix would never run with the CF card and adapter, it would crash before it installed the drive...

Copied some files from a cd to the HDD... seems very slow, but then, I am probably used to my Amiga 500 setup...

So, when the new CF adapter arrives, I might try copying the setup as is, from this ide drive, to the compact flash, and see what happens...

That's a proper electronics tinkerer's workbench as well - nice one.  Ahhhh the smell of leaded fluxy solder :)

Had to laugh... as soon as I read this comment on his Workbench I immediately scrolled up and had another look at his Workbench screen and saw nothing special about it at all. Infact I thought "it's dull, boring and just plain wrong" (4 colour mode etc). Then the penny dropped.

;)

What you can't see in the pics, is that the ceiling is only about 6 foot high, and there's two 36watt fluro tubes mounted less than 3 foot above the bench... its bright!

I ended up getting this working... although I don't recall the details..

However! the A600 is back/still on the bench!

The idea now, is to add a DC-DC power supply internally, to run the A600 off an external, 19volt, laptop power supply.

The only PSUs I have are the A500 bricks! Which kinds defeats the purpose of the compactness of the A600!

Oh, and I was repairing an amplifier, that had some warm resistors inside it... left it on while I went to get Hungry Jacks... so used it to keep my fries warm while eating my burger ^_^

Hopefully Hungry Jack's doesn't substitute Roo meat for beef (a perpetual rumor about the chain's licensee Burger King).

@kickstart

This is the one I used... with audio connector too...

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Slimline-CD-DVD-ROM-to-40-Pin-IDE-Adapter-/170950610516?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item27cd734e54

This is a real easy solution when using a Fast ATA MKIV from AmigaKit... but will work with a four way IDE interface too...  just tricky with master/slave and connecting the ribbon cable correctly to the MB IDE connector.

Connecting audio out to A1200 MB...

Same house I've lived in for my entire life (minus about 2 years a while back when I moved out)

The X-Files stuff was all from my older brother, 15+ years ago. There is also a large "X-Files" logo on the wall behind the 286 motherboard in the top left, and a few other bits and pieces around, such as "trust no one"
