1200 won't boot anymore after installing idefix97
« on: December 31, 2013, 11:02:19 AM »
I am quite shocked....I tried to install idefix97, and after rebooting the miggy, it won't start anymore.

I thought that the issue was the startup sequence, but in fact it won't run the boot menu (pressing both mouse buttons), nor won't start with a floppy....I just see a black screen after the indivision screen at boot.

What happened? Do I have to remove the CF card and dvd drive and try to boot it like that? I have never seen something like that honestly....the boot from HD happens quite later, so it should always start from floppy. :angry::angry:

Any suggestion?

Ok, the floppy was my bad...I had the ribbon cable upside down.

I've started WB3.1, and commented out the idefix lines in the startup and I've got back my wb.

It basically locks when it runs c:Idefix. I was told that Idefix won't play nicely with CF cards....I guess that's the issue ?

Solved!

In case you are wondering what happened, this is what I did to make it work.

- Installed Idefix97, choose to say NO when it ask me to start idefix

- Removed the lines written in the startup sequence (so c:Idefix won't start)

- ran IDEfixPrefs :
Unit 0: atapi speed: default, Unit type: auto, Unit mount: Hd
Unit 1: atapi speed: default, Unit type: IDE Unit, Unit mount: cd
Unit 2: atapi speed: default, Unit type: disabled, Unit mount: disable mount
Unit 3: atapi speed: default, Unit type: disabled, Unit mount: disable mount

and saved

- in Devs/DOSDrivers, changed the CD0: tool types (idefix created one, I just replaced it with the one in Storage on ClassicWB) as following:

ACTIVATE=1
DEVICE=scsi.device
UNIT=1

Now after reboot, I see the cd mounting without problems on the desktop, works like a charm :)

Hope that this may help some others that has issues with the cd....I am not sure exactly what made it work, but I have added all the steps that I did, and it works now.

If someone has more info about what the heck is going on, I would appreciate, since I prefer to understand what happened :)

I was having a similar problem with IDEFix about the same time this morning - how strange.
I discovered that when it was trying to mount CD0: it was crashing - I moved CD0 from devs and tried to mount manually and it would crash again. I got around it by removing IDEFix and using a different filesystem and CD0 entry.

I use classicWB and I think something in IDEfix doesn't like one of the patches - If I boot up in on of the modes which doesn't activate all the patches as it boots, IDEfix works.

There are many posts about users complaining about the bad interaction between magicWB and Idefix; altho they are able to resolve them with patches....I spent quite a bit of time before finding these posts; was a nice instructional reading :)
