Amiga 2000, What use?
« on: December 26, 2013, 11:05:36 PM »
First off please excuse my ignorance when it comes to the Amigas. I have owned four different models since about 1985. Have been out of the Amiga scene for many years and the brain just does not work like it use to.

I am contemplating getting an A2000 and was wondering just what use is it? I mean with the A1200/600 and A4000, what can you really do with an OCS chipped machine?  No AGA for nice modern screens. Aren't you limited to WB3.1(w/ 3.1 rom)?? I know there were upgrades but most are long since out of production and the old ones sell for a mint.

Is it possible to find IDE upgrades now?? What about graphics?? I have read about the ACA500 and something like that would really fire up my old 500. Anything similar for the A2000??

Sorry for all the questions but trying to re learn.

It's totally useless.  You should give it to me.  :laugh1:

Just kidding, I use my A2000 almost every day, either for entertainment/games/nostalgia, or to tinker with the OS (I enjoy trying to squeeze maximum potential out of this old hardware).  To try to cover a few of your points:

The A2000 is a lot more "bulletproof" than many other machines.  Harder to kill with a leaky battery, tons of expansion options, etc.  It's easy to work on, easy to expand, and quite capable.  With the Indivision ECS you can use any modern LCD monitor and screenmodes like 800x600x16 colors, 1024x768x4 colors, etc. Expansions for it are almost the cheapest of any Amiga (since they're so plentiful).  Sure, you won't have AGA, but only a few games require that.  About the only thing hard to find or expensive would be a graphics card, but that goes for just about any Amiga model.

You can run up to Workbench 3.9, or maaaybe 4.0 Classic if you find one of the ultra-rare PPC accelerators for A2000, and since you asked there are also a variety of IDE solutions, ranging from Zorro cards to cards that fit underneath the processor socket to add an IDE interface.  But personally I'd ditch hard drives and use a CF, that's what both my Miggy's have.  ;)

Here's a few pics of mine, you can tell I love it a lot, haha.  :D

Thanks for the reply. I thought you couldn't run OS 3.9 without at least AGA. Also are there any current IDE solutions being made? Anything like the ACA500? Sorry for the questions but its been way too long since I looked at an Amiga. Where else other than Ebay can I find IDE solutions??

Any particular reason why you really want IDE?

Check out this board by Kipper2K, a well-respected hardware designer. It does fast ram expansion as well as a CF interface:

Here's his website with other products:

Amibay, listed above, is a trading site. It has a "wanted" section where you can post anything in particular you might be looking for. Moderation can be a bit "heavy handed" at times, but I've met some good people on there. You could post that you're looking for an IDE controller card?

Personally I'd look for a card that sits in the A2000 processor slot. Rumor is that the ACA500 might be adapted to that use, as well (where it would fit much better than hanging out the side of an A500, IMHO).

Only requirements for 3.9 are a 68020+, 6MB ram, and a CD drive (and obviously the 3.1 ROM).

Dear Friend:

I have been using an amiga 2000 for a few months.
I am very happy with it, and could never part with.
Is a basic unexpanded amiga 2000 (68000)with 1 mb chip and 2 mb fast ram.
I can play my 2 favorite games, shadow of the beast 1 and defender of the crown.
Even though the amiga is very basic, it has enough power to run both moviesetter
and disney animation studio.  Is enough to make a small animation that could fit
in a single floppy disk, and still look good.
Also, amos professional runs super, which means you can make nice amiga games.
My amiga 2000 is enough for all my amiga needs.
Cheers !!!

Another option if you really want IDE would be a SCSI-to-IDE bridge.  So you could use any standard A2000 accelerator with a SCSI interface, with IDE devices.

Here's a couple options, there's plenty more on ebay, etc.:

Mike,

Is that 4000 keyboard adapter specific to Amiga or generic? I'd like that.
