Cyberstorm 060 mk1. Could this make my Cybervision 64/3D work?
« on: February 10, 2004, 05:46:57 PM »
I have an opportunity to buy a Cyberstorm 060 Mk I for my a4000/040d. Some of you might have read my previous posts about this machines absolute refusal to work with my Cybervision 64/3d.

This might be a silly thing to ask, but could this potentially solve this problem? I've been told on many occassions that it's not my Buster 09 - could this board fix any other motherboard/CPU issues for example memory access which might be effecting the Cybervision operation?

What sort of speed increase could this give me over the 040? In real terms what sort of improvement would the card make?

Thanks

I dunno if it will help your compatibility issues but I do know that any 68040/68060 card with local memory will leave the 3640 card for dust...The 3640 has the lamest memory interface going :-(

For a 50MHz 68060, you are looking at maybe a 3 fold average increase in performance over the 040. Memory intensive stuff will be much faster.

Hmm... That depends on if the problem was in your 3640 card, to begin with...  As far as I know, the Cyberstorm 060 mk1 should behave similiar to a 3640 in most circumstances.  I don't know of any specific patches on the card that address zorro bus issues.  So, if it's your 3640 card that is causing the problem, the problem will go away when you install the CS.  If it was a timing issue, the problem might go away, as the 50mhz CyberStorm is a little more timing-friendly than the original 3640.  But, if your original problem was caused by something else, then the card may not help it.

The benchmarks say you should get about 2.5x performance boost.  The "feel" of the computer will be improved by AT LEAST this much, in my opinion.  The Amiga will surely act much more crisp and responsive in all tasks.  I went from a 3640 to a CyberStorm Mk2, and was AMAZED at how FAAAST my Amiga suddenly became.
