Upgrading to 2mb chip
« on: December 14, 2013, 09:29:23 PM »
Another thing that occurred to me is that I may not be able to upgrade the chip ram since the Derringer 030 covers the Fat Agnes chip. Again does any one have this combination?

I have an A500+ with the same problem.
but it conflicts with my scandoubler.

i am aiming to desolder all sockest and put cabling in between the mainboard and the derringer. I am guessing......! but i thint 1 or 2 inches suld be suficient.

the remaing problem is to find any decent controller to install in addition to the derrigner and the scandoubler...
so far i have no real data on any controller that wil for  sertain work in combination with the derringer....
ICD add ide or something.....

to solve your problem you could trye to add an extra socket. Assuming it is an A500 you are talkingabout...

That sounds like good plan. I would not trust my solder skills. I re soldered the RCA jack on my 1080 monitor before it died but that was about it. I don't have any idea for A500 controller either. At this point I am getting re-acquainted with the Amiga classic including the OS and tools, and classic expansion hardware/software. Not to mention all the new stuff that has come out in the last few years.

I have an Expansion Systems Data Flyer SCSI/IDE combination controller in my A2000. I wonder if they made one for the A500 in a side car like the one that GVP made. I noticed you have a Trump card in your A500+, I had a Trumpcard SCSI in my A2000 when I bought from the original owner back in 1992. I had upgraded the rom for it, but I think sold it in the mid 90's. I still have the original Trumpcard rom sitting in a box. Wasn't that made by IVS?

It looks like Expansion Systems did make a IDE/SCSI controller for the A500.

It appears to be the same controller inside a  side car. Mine has the molex plug like in the 1st photo. It has only 3 pins with the 4th missing. I guessing this could be needed when used with an A500 for power to the controller but I don't know. I have to find find my manual.

I never actually was able to get the IDE part of the controller to work but then again I only tried once or twice back in the 90's. I figured the SCSI was working just fine so I didn't need IDE at that time. I plan on trying again once I get the A2000 up and running.

I have an A500 with a VXL-30 accelerator, Megachip, and Indivision ECS, among other things, crammed in there.  As long as you don't plan on putting the metal top shield back on they all fit fine, I just had to use one additional socket to raise the accelerator up a bit, and a bit of very thin foam between the bottom of the accelerator and the top of the Megachip, and between the top of the accelerator and bottom of the keyboard.  System works great, 100% stable, no heat issues, although I have considered adding a small fan at some point.

Good luck with your project!

Also I'm curious to see pics of this new Elbox E530 accelerator.  It would be nice if (using modern technology) they're able to make the accelerator smaller than the old dinner-plate sized units of old, LOL.  ;)

the trumphcard works quite nice. but i would like to get my hands on a new controller. prefably one mounted on the inside of the A500. so i could make use of the action replay.. :D

This would be great if it works, but sometimes certain electronic components behave badly when on extension cables like this.  You get weird RF interference and echoes on the line, etc.

I'm just thinking of the issue that SX64s had when Commodore initially tried to extend the cartridge port to the back (top?) of the case with a ribbon cable.  They eventually had to replace the ribbon cable with a small PCB.

I would think that something as critical as an 030 CPU accelerator might have such a problem.

But it's worth a try.

I am aware of the probability of interference......
and i am afrait it will ruin my plans.
However i am going to try. as soon as i get a decent IDE solution. :D

but back to thread starters problem.
Have you tried with a socket extender like "oldsmobile mike" have in his setup?
sounds like your most likely solution....

Right, do they make SCSI-2 or SCSI-3 for the A500? I have not looked especially since I no longer have an A500. I wished I had not sold my A1200/ Blizzard 060/SCSI-2 7 years ago What was I thinking!

yes they did. but most of them were sidecar extensions...
some few were internal cpu socket expansions. like the adide.
What i don't know yet is if the adide style controllers will work with the derringer or not...

I'm not aware of any specific A500 sidecar expansions that make use of the faster SCSI-2 or SCSI-3 commands or bus.  However if you are, please enlighten us!  :)
