ECS, OCS.
« on: February 09, 2004, 10:18:01 AM »
Ok, I wasn't sure if I should post it here or in software, so here goes:

What type of games/programs does my amiga 500 run? Is it just OCS, or would it do ECS as well?

What's the real difference, and which one is the "better", IE: more stuff for it? Thanks.

The ocs chip set have normal AGNUS, Chip 8371/8372 with 512k/1mb and 8375 chip are the ECS AGNUS, A500+ for example have this chip, and its capable have 2mb of chip. The chip DENISE is part of OCS or ECS chip set, OCS have the denise chip called 8362R6/R8, the R8 version is capable to show 64colors equal of the ecs chip set. The super denise is 8373 (found on A500+) and have all capacities of the denise chip, but have a lots of new resolutions, and full support of the EHB mode and the PCHG format (show 640x512xham6) is better, a very pretty game using ECS chipset is for example, Wasted Dreams or Hell Squad =) very pretty games

Cheers

@Dani:
"PCHG format (show 640x512xham6)"

640x512? I thought HAM-6 only allowed 320x512...

BTW, someone could explain the differences between the different HAM modes like SHAM, DHAM and PCHG?

I dont know what diference of differents amiga hires HAM modes, for me the best is PCHG "Picture High Graphics Mode" is capable to show 640x512 and of course with full overscan too, you can se this on a game made by electronic arts, called Labyrinth Of Time for CDTV & CD32 full game is on highres mode with ham using pchg =)

SHAM is regular bit-planar with a copper-list to change palette entries.  I think it is hard-coded to be a virtical resolution of 200 pixels.  It can be high-resoultion or low-resolution horizontally, however.
