Amiga VGA adapter
« on: February 09, 2004, 10:15:25 AM »
Ok, I might be able to get one of these little things that were made by commodore that are 23->15pin adapters.

Would it work if I just plugged it into my A500? Thanks.

Nope, not on an A500, these adaptors require an amiga with the AGA chipset, which can output some screenmodes in >31Khz rate
Anyway is the only way

Those things do work on your A500 but they are not scan doublers so unless your monitor syncs down at 15khz you are out of luck.

I do have a nec xv15, but it appears to only go down to 31. Ah well, I'll just continue to use the 1084s. :)

Yeap, it will work in an A1200, but only for some special screenmodes. Most of the games wont work. You need a scan doubler to get the native 15Khz output of the amiga up to 31Khz so it can be viewed in a modern VGA monitor.
Anyway is the only way

If its the same one I'm the highest bidder on that at the mo.
Btw, can you still buy bran new monitors dedicated for the Amiga? say in 19inch? without having to buy scan doublers etc.

Amigastuff.co.uk advertise them VGA adaptors but didn't have them in stock. I paid 21 quid by credit card and 2 weeks past and still didn't get it. I complained and he said it must have got lost in the post. He said he would give me a refund, I said I don't want a refund, I want the adaptor. He said there was problems getting them, which begs the question about it being lost in the post. Si I agreed to a refund.
Two weeks later there was no sign of 21 quid in my Online banking account. I complained, he said I had been refinded on the 18th Jan. I had to go to my bank for proof it hadn't been put back in my account. I forwarded this proof to them and he apoligises and said he refunded the wrong person. So it took yet another week for this 21quid to show up.
They are still advertisng them, but can't get them. The mind boggles.

Steer clear of Amigastuff.co.uk.  I heard a lot of bad things about them.

I'm pretty sure those VGA adapters work on any amiga with a full ECS chipset too as they support extra screenmodes compatible with the VGA type monitors. the standard A500 OCS chipset doesn't support it though.

I have such a VGA-Adapter, and I will get an Amiga 1200 next week. So how will I be able to change the screenmode, that I can use the 1200 with my PC-monitor? Can it be done by the standard-software, which is delivered with the Amiga?

Thanks for your help,
Markus

Easy.  Put the "Multiscan" and "VGAOnly" monitor drivers in sys:devs/monitors.  You will quite likely find the drivers in sys:storage/monitors in one of your Workbench 3 disks (which should come with the A1200).  Now reboot.  Then run the screenmode prefs program and you should see "Multiscan:Productivity" modes at 31 KHz.  Without "VGAOnly" you will get 27 or 29 KHz, which may not work on your monitor.

As you may understand, you will need to do this with your video monitor plugged in too.  I suggest you connect it on the composite output of the A1200.  Or connect a TV instead using the RF output (the cable should be provided already with the A1200).  You will then be able to connect your VGA monitor on the RGB output and see if the VGA screenmode has worked.  Be warned: after changing to VGA mode, switch off the video monitor/TV.

Good luck!  :-D

You should try the NEC 3D, which scans down to 15KHz.

Examples of (older) monitors that can also be used are: Taxan 775, Eizo 2060S, Acorn AKF18, Acorn AKF50, Philips CM8833, Philips CM11342.

I see a few of those VGA adaptors going through Ebay. I have been bitterly let down with this one which I got off Ebay. When I plugged it in and run the software, I had to take the brightness to its maximum and the contrast aswell and I could only just barely see then. I never bothered complaining although I'd been ripped off. And even if it did work proper it wouldn't let you play your old favourites.

http://davgw.net/Forum/index.php?act=Attach&type=post&id=2598

I have seen monitors stating they are Amiga compatible, but I was told that they are only PC monitors anyway and you still need the vga adaptor scan doubler thing. So whats so Amiga compatible about them? What I would like to see is a modern snazzy monitor dedicated to the Amiga that just plugs straight in, and preferably 19 inch at that. I have not seen any!
What would be equally as nice is for someone to come up with a vga adaptor that does *Everything* on your PC monitor, games, and the whole caboodle. Surely there's techies out there that could manage this in this day and age.

BTW What may I ask is a Video Toaster?
Simple as pos please.
