Indivision ECS modes using OCS Denise
« on: October 30, 2013, 03:30:32 PM »
I read somewhere that ECS screen modes would be available with Indivision ECS modes using OCS Denise, but unable to verify as they don't show up on my 2000.

Would anyone know if this is true?

Thanks.

I believe the ECS modes should work with OCS Denise + Indivision.  What version of Workbench are you running? Assuming it's some semi-modern version like 3.1, they should be available in your list of screenmodes.  IMHO why not just buy an ECS Denise, they're <$20 on Ebay. ;)

Also, if you also only have the OCS Agnus (512KB of chip) you're probably going to want to upgrade that to use those better modes.  Personally I love that I can use my A2000 in 800x600x16 color mode, and 1024x768x4 colors, but performance could be a bit better.  Normally I use a custom overscan something-like 672x480x16 color screen.  Any way of looking at it though, Indivision ECS rocks.  ;)

I have ECS Agnus (1 mb) and OCS Denise.  "Almost ECS"

I thought the ECS Denise was reimplimented in the flicker-fixer.
No other screenmodes are there, only 640x200/400 interlaced.

It's no big deal, I just didn't want to keep removing delicate chips.
Thanks.

I dont have a real OCS Amiga or Indi ECS, however I also read it will work, on the VGA port, not RGB. Also make sure to move multisync monitor file from storage to dev/monitors.

I don't think it'll work. SuperHires PAL/NTSC may be possible but everything with a non-15kHz horizontal scan rate would be very problematic on the chip level. (Just an educated guess though.)

You don't need the "multisync" monitor driver for Indivision ECS.  It automatically detects and scan-doubles every mode to 31KHz (standard NTSC, standard PAL, etc.).  Multisync is only a hack for people using modes like Productivity with an ECS chipset and the silver C= adapter, AFAIK.

Sorry, I think I might've been thinking of "VGAOnly" in my last comment.

I don't like any of the "ClassicWB" stuff.  IMHO they add too much bloat and do too many "weird things" to a normally configured Workbench.  When you open Workbench:Prefs/ScreenMode, does it look something like this?  Are you sure you've got all the correct monitor drivers moved over from Storage:Monitors to Devs:Monitors?  Even with the Indivision you're still limited to 4 colors for the "super high res" modes, but you can do more useful ones like 1024x768, instead of the weird 1280x400-ish modes.

multisync monitor driver should bring 640x480x2bbp which is a pretty useless mode when you have 640x512 PAL (or 640x400 NTSC) interlaced-deinterlaced available, however, that is one ESC mode the Indivision ECS is suppose to bring.

http://aminet.net/package/driver/moni/HighGFX40_6

this package should also bring 1024x768 and 1280x720 x 2bpp which have a little more utility.

Before I forget, you need Indivision firmware 1.10 also to use these updated screenmodes.  With the Indivision in my A500 it took several hours of googling, and stumbling over pages that were written in German, to find all the necessary files to do the update.

With my A2000 I just ordered it direct from AmigaKit with the firmware already updated, also OS 3.9 includes all the correct drivers... makes it much easier.  ;)

If you have the older firmware this post is a good starting point for finding 1.10:

You're killing me dude. :rtfm:

Step 1:  Update firmware to 1.10
Step 2:  Install all correct screenmodes

If you're tying to use standard ones like Super High Res, they should be in Storage:Monitors.  You'll need to copy them into Devs:Monitors and reboot (or double-click them to install once).  If you're trying to use ones like SuperPlus or HighGfx, you'll need to locate them on the Internet (read: Google) or upgrade to Workbench 3.9 with all the Boing Bags packs (which include the updated screenmode drivers as well).

ha ha.. I swear I'm not trying to kill you.

Yes, I understand the update for superplus, highgfx.

But, the ECS modes should just need NTSC in Dev:Monitor for superhires.

Superhires might not have been the best anyway- just can't understand why it's not there.

Thanks.

Hummm, I got nothing, then, since according to the docs it "should" work. Sounds like maybe Workbench is filtering out those modes that are flagged "Requires ECS"? Wonder if there's a way to trick it, either by editing the display driver or through some time of SetPatch modification?  You could always try messaging Jens, I believe he's active on EAB or some of the other Amiga boards.

Maybe try HighGfx or SuperPlus and see if those work? Just out of curiosity.

As another solution keep your eye on ebay, Super Denise chips show up pretty regularly for only about $20. Good luck!
